Poor Diet 'Gives Kids the Blues'
Scottish Daily Record
03-07-07
POOR diet could be behind depression in thousands of British teenagers.
Dr Diane Bamber, of Cambridge University, told a nutrition conference that research showed a link between depression and a diet lacking in vitamins and minerals.
And she warned that kids from poor backgrounds might be more at risk.
She said: "It is important to consider that access to fresh fruit and vegetables can be difficult for families on a budget when processed food is often cheaper than fresh produce."
Teenage depression costs the UK billions a year and is linked to obesity, anorexia, suicide and anti-social behaviour.
Thousands more teenagers are thought to be less seriously affected with mood swings, irritability and changing sleep patterns.
