Krispy Kreme unveils whole-wheat doughnut
ENQUIRER WIRE SERVICES

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc., still recovering from the low-carb diet craze that starved the company's earnings, unveiled a whole-wheat doughnut Monday.

The 100 percent whole-wheat doughnut - with 180 calories - has a caramel flavoring and is covered with the doughnut maker's original glaze.

Krispy Kreme sales started slipping three years ago at the height of the low-carbohydrate diet craze. While the stock once traded above $50, it fell to about $4 during 2006.

Don't forget the trans-fats they are cooked in.

Despite Krispy Kreme's excuse, it was poor management, not low-carb eaters that causes the company it's problems. Low carb was never a large share of the food market.

Krispy Kreme gets all healthy on your ass

http://adweek.blogs.com/adfreak/images/krispy.jpg (http://adweek.blogs.com/photos/uncategorized/krispy.jpg) One could, at first glance, cynically view Krispy Kreme’s leaner, meaner doughnut (http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/2007-02-26-krispy-kreme_x.htm) as an attempt to capitalize on a low-carb fad that died soon after that Atkins guy did. Or you could shrug it off as Krispy Kreme’s not-so-subtle attempt to pull itself out from the financial hole that said fad threw it into. In reality, it’s probably a little of column A and a little of column B, not to mention “the company’s board concluding that two former executives were trying to ’manage earnings’ to meet expectations,” in what was tastefully dubbed an “accounting mess.” There’s got to be an Enron joke here, but I can’t think of it at the moment. Besides, the impending failure of a whole-wheat doughnut is funny enough.

I think it will sell very good. Too many people nowadays believe that whole wheat is the key to good health and fitness.

Kraft corp is also selling boxes of whole wheat crackers loaded with carbs to Southbeach dieters and unfortunately they seem to be selling well.
