Hi I am 2 weeks into diet but havent managed to get the book yet, I was wondering about Net carbs - is this total carb less the amount that Sugars or less the fibre amount? :help:
Also where would you buy the ketosis sticks that seem to be mentioned alot?
Thanks,

Total carbs-fiber grams=net carbs
So, say you have something that says:
Total carb 14g
Fiber 5g
Then the net carbs would be 14-5=9g
Hope I helped!

Right and best I know if it shows sugar alcohol you also deduct that amount as well... (such things as sugar free candy)
By the way, IF you are on induction then definitely stay away from the candies. I just wanted to let you know that since you say you are new. My dh and I eat them, counted towards our daily allowed carbs, but many people advise against them. We have no problems with them but some people do. Our systems are all different!
Good luck to you on your new woe.

It's sugar alcohols, not sugar, that some people also deduct from their carbs. So, for instance, if you have a piece of s/f candy and it says there are 20g carbs - 1g dietary fiber - 13g sugar alcohols. Your net carbs would be 20 - 1 - 13 = 6 net carbs. Other people choose not to deduct the SA's from their total at all and some people can't even eat them because it causes them to stall.
I don't use ketostix so I can't help you there.
Hope this helps also.

Ketostix are available at almost any pharmacy over the counter. The best brand is Bayer and you can expect to pay $8-$10 for a bottle of 50 strips. I cut mine in half lengthwise with very sharp scissors so I get 100 tests.

That's a great idea, I'll have to do that from now on!

I'm new and just started this week and was wondering.........when counting carbs, then do I only count the "net carbs"(not the total carbs)?
For example I got some low carb tortillas - total carbs-8g/net carbs-3g
I just wasn't sure how to list this for my daily consumed carbs.

Underneath where it says total carbs does it say "dietary fiber - 5 g? If so, that is where they get the net carbs from. They subtract the 5g fiber from the total carbs to get the 3 net carbs. They don't ususally list "net carbs" in the nutritional fact panel. You have to do the math yourself. I'm assuming your low carb tortillas says:
Total Carbs - 8g
Dietary Fiber - 5g
Sugars - 0g
And then it might go on to list the Protein or something else. If the above example had contained sugar alcohols, the amount of sugar alcohols would be listed in that sub-group of total carbs above. Some people deduct the sugar alcohols to get their "net carbs" and some people only deduct the fiber to get their "net carbs". Then there are other people that won't even touch it if it contains sugar alcohols. It's a persoanl choice as to if you want to include them in your way of eating or not.
Hope this helps.

Thank you, I did not know this.
Ok, so since I'm in the early stage and trying to keep my carbs below 30g per day. I would only count the net carbs correct (when adding up my daily total)?
I just wanted to make sure.

If you have a Sam's Club or Costco membership, you might check the price in the pharmacy there as well. I purchased my last bottle of 100 at Sam's for considerably less than the pharmacy in our local grocery store, which is where we fill most of our prescriptions.

For example I got some low carb tortillas - .Male sure you check the list of ingredients for the tortillas to stick to the list of allowed foods! You might find lowcarb torillas contain either soya or wheat flours which are not allowed till you reach the relevant level/rung of the second stage of Atkins Ongoing Weight Loss (aka OWL) that allows all its ingredients.
