Has anyone tried taking a Niacin supplement to raise HDL and if you did, did it work? I bought some non-flushing Niacin only to search further and realize I should have gotten the slow release Niacin that is Nicotinic acid, instead. I just wondered if any of you have any experience.

You are correct on the nicotinic acid..I like that coupled with Pantethine.

But I feel the best supp for improving overall cholesterol profiles is Berberine Sulfate.

Secondly Guggulipids

The Heartscanblog doctor has recommendations for niacin. I think he says neither of those types are any good, you have to take the sort that makes you flush. http://heartscandoctor.blog.com (search for niacin)

DR Atkins (on page 331 of Vita Nutrients) recommends a mixture of
Pantethine (600 to 1,200 mg)
Inositol hexanicotinate (500 to 1,500 mg)
Chromium (300 to 600 mcg)
Fish oil (7 grams)
Vitamin C (1 to 5 grams)
Fiber 10 grams
Lecithin granules 2 to 3 tbs
guggulipid 100 to 200 mg
GLA (borage oil) 1,200 to 3,600 mg
Garlic 2,400 to 4,000 mg

Inositol hexanicotinate didn't seem to do a thing for my levels...

When I spoke with the doc at lifescore, he said it has to be the flush type, and to build up to theraputic levels slowly.

Cam...

My husband took niacin for sometime to lower his cholestrol..He took it faithfully for months and lowered his from around 250-235 now its less then that. The only thing he said is never take it on an empty stomach..best to take with food or you will sure feel the side effects..flushed/hot somewhat nausy. He liked taking it better then the actual meds. He found a good book online and read about it.

Thanks for all the replys. It looks like I'll need to try the flushing kind, much to my chagrin. LOL

My doctor suggested taking 2 baby aspirin 30 minutes before taking the niacin (and taking the niacin right before bed). That's what I do, and I almost never notice the flush.
