This was my first traveling since I started using a meter. The English breakfast included Bacon (English bacon is kind of half way between our bacon and Canadian bacon), baked eggs, Sausage, baked beans, juice, toast, jam, and mushrooms. My meter and taste quickly told me that the sausage had a lot of carb filler, and the beans had a lot of sugar.

All fast food in London is heavily carbed, much of it looks like it would have tasted great. They had food of all cultures - French pasties, Cornish Pasties, Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, KFC breaded chicken.

Tried skipping lunch. Because I am not on meds I thought that would be OK, so checked my BG 8 hours after breakfast - oops. I needed to eat. Eventually I found that the ubiquitous Caesar Salad at the museums was my best bet. It included Chicken, I tossed the croûtons, and asked for extra dressing.

Finally found a full service grocery, Sainburies (sp?), which had roasted chicken pieces, bought some mayo (it doesn't have to be refrigerated) and whatever veggies looked eatable in a hotel room.

FBG was a problem, I am guessing that having changed 8 time zones my body was under some stress. These and other readings tended to be 10 points higher than at home readings. Few readings under a 100, as opposed to almost half at home, and many readings over 120, even over 130, compared to rarely over 120 at home.

I find travelling and eating always difficult and as you say, I always have higher BG readings away from home than at home. I think even though we do try to be careful, the difference in food preparation could be substantial without us even realizing it.

wow- what a great job you did- I'm type 1 and I would love to stay in the 120-130 range during international travel!

Thanks - right now I am waiting to see how long it takes me to get back to my normal BGs. I'm still running 10-20 pts over what I was. Some people say that your body takes a day per time zone. Hmm?

Well, after almost two weeks I finally got a reading under a hundred, actually 88. Next morning after carb countdown chocl milk, light body weight exercise (five minutes) and waiting ninety minutes 134. Maybe too much exercise, the pharm. told me to WALK.

Better news: went to Walmart with Rx for ReliOn test strips, discovered that Medicare covers 80%, so $8 for a hundred.

I am going to get a referral to UW sometime in the next two months or so. I was/am interested in what inhale-able insulin could do, seems like it would get into your blood stream faster, and also exit faster than injectable. Unfortunately 1mm is 3 units worth of insulin, about six times as much as I would find helpful. Dr. Bernstein said 1 unit drops him 60, and some type 2 people as much as 80. He does use fractional units.
