Hi all, this is my first post.

Would like more info on the supplements and where to find them on online at prices that are reasonable.

Been Diabetic for about 5 years now with a strong familial hx of it as my grandparents had it, my dad and older brother has it, and I had gestational diabetic with my youngest child, who is now 12. I was most probably insulin resistant for 10 years before that, as i had endometriosis, poly cystic ovarian syndrome and irreg hormones since age 25 (all conditions that can be caused by hormonal imbalance secondary to insulin resistance).

Currently taking actos 45 mg and metformin xr 1500 mg but H1c still staying in the 7.3 range, probably because I have Dawn phenonemon with FBS in the 200 - 225 range even with taking the meds. I have experimented with taking the meds at different times, which helps somewhat but fasting BS is still always high.

Getting frustrated with the meds as the two I take are at pretty much the max dose, yet my fbs is still high. My MD don't advocate low carb, but usually is pretty good about letting me try different meds since he knows that I am an eye doctor. Haven't really started low carbing until today . . .started tonight at dinner with arparagus and turkey with cinnamin ice tea.

As I said, I am pretty knowledgeable about the disease diabetes itself since I am an eye doctor (optometrist) and see patients with diabetes all the time. Lately I feel so frustated inside when I hear how good some of my patients' diabetic control is with just taking 500 mg of metformin for example, and yet, miine isn't at all, even with all the meds i am taking. . . hence my first post here ( may not be a regular poster though)

Am so frustated with my numbers, that I am considering getting a prescription for the new inhaled insulin Exubera or possibly trying the new drug Januvia (I'm probably not spelling either one correctly). . .but want to start low carbing first.

Anyway, back to my initial query --any suggestions on where online to get 1. Vitamin D chdecalciferol ( do I need natural?),
2. vitamin C (which kind? chelated, reg, etc),
3. gymnema sylestre,
4. GTF chromium,
5. ALA
6. Calcium ( which kind)
7. the new supplement that starts with a P_____, that is supposed to be many times better than oral medication.

Thanks for the help.

I'm can't help you with your question about the supplements, but I can let you know that for me following a L/C plan and exercising is what is controlling my BG numbers. If you haven't been following a LC plan up until now, please do give it a try. It has worked wonders for me and for many others. I find that exercise is equally important for me, so if you aren't doing that either, give it a try as well. Good luck to you!

.....Hi Lisa and WELCOME :-)
I don't think I can help much here but I will try do my best.

About :.... "Getting frustrated with the meds"........
*I* would go insulin and if you do better you can always get out of it.

LC eating is the way for us. There are many people that are doing so well by eating this way.
I am very bad with that. sometimes cannot stick with that for a long long long time....always find myself cheating.

About on line supplements...I do order from http://www.vitacost.com
I take only 1 complete multi-vitamin a day whenever I don't forget.
I cannot tell you if they are pricey or reasonable.

I am not a believer of supplements to help me with my Diabetes. Have try so-so many of them in my life but nothing do the job for me to have good BS as eating right and not much all day long !!!
.....For me - this is - the key...and wish it was easy too.

GOOD LUCK and have TONS of health.

Hi Miss Lisa, and welcome!

I hope you'll change your mind about being a regular poster. I'm sure you'll find like I do, that being a part of things here, getting to know people, makes this journey so much easier, and the wealth of knowledge here is invaluable, too.

Eating LC is going to make a big difference in your BG readings. Although you hear of overnight changes, and you can expect to see some initial dramatic drops, you can't expect your metabolism to heal overnight. It will be a gradual healing and improving process as you stick with LC eating.

That sounds just like me, and I went on insulin. Just a small dose (16 units) of long-acting type at bedtime, and my numbers, especially FBS, are much improved. If you eat truly LC, insulin will not cause weight gain, as there's not enough carb in your system to get stored as fat.
It doesn't have to mean forever. - I fully expect to come off the insulin as I near normal weight ranges, and hope to further reduce my oral meds, too. As it is, insulin allowed me to come off glipizide. I still take actos and metformin.

I do take a lot of supplements. There's a limit to how many pills I'm willing to swallow a day, though, so I've chosen the ones that I hope will help with control of diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
I second picaboo's recommendation of vitacost.com. Seems to be good prices and quality of products there.

Hi - Just to agree with what's already been said - I too like you was on pills for quite awhile with not being able to regulate my sugars. Then I asked to go on insulin - Still did not get the numbers that I wanted to. Then I went on L.C. and voila! the combination of both insulin (Lantus-5 u. at bedtime and 5. U. in a.m. ) and Novorapid with each meal - Just a couple of units with each meal depending on how much carbs I am eating. Just about everything is a carb. Get a book on gylcemic index- that will really help. so both insulin and trying hard not to eat many carbs is what did it for me. Remember not to eat anything white except cauliflower!!!!!! I've been experimenting on raw food eating lately- seeds , nuts , veggies and little fruit. I try and eat this way for 2 meals and then for dinner I eat meat (
small portion) and veggies , salad . Hope this helps. Take care . Suzy :agree:Also wanted to say 7.3 for Alc is too high. Try and get it under 7.0 aim for 6's. Good luck.

[QUOTE=Miss Lisa]Hi all, this is my first post.

Hi Miss Lisa,
I can understand your frustration. I had the same problems before I started LC'ing. The low carb will help your numbers tremendously. Since you're experiencing the Dawn Phen., you realize that your body is very much out of balance... this will take a few days to correct, up to 2 weeks possibly, but it will come under control with low carb. The reason is (to put it simply) your body sees a lower blood sugar as being TOO low, and makes your liver put out more glucose. But those internal engineers will calm down after a few days and things will bet back into better balance, then you'll be seeing much better numbers ;) Low carb is the only thing that really works for me. I never had any luck with metformin either, so don't feel bad :) All it did was upset my stomach, ugh.

The nice thing about Low carb is that you can eat when you feel like eating - I'm a nibbler so that was a big deal to me! It keeps you from feeling deprived - that always was a diet buster for me!

Good luck to you! and I hope you decide to keep posting! :)
