I know it says, "No calories, no carbs!" and thats all they'll give you, but I'm pretty sure thats because a serving is one thumb-sized packet. As for carbs it says <1 gram and calories zero, but they're allowed to say calories zero for any number less than five. If I continue to put five packets in my afternoon starbucks, four in my morning cottage cheese or oatmeal, and a few straight on my tounge when I good sugar cravings, its bound to add up, right? Does anyone know the actual calorie/carb count?

The Splenda itself has no carbs, but the filler does. (Splenda itself doesn't have enough bulk to fill the packets. ;))
Each little packet has approx 1 carb - probably 0.9something. So I think you need to cool it a little with your Splenda use unless you can get hold of liquid Splenda which has zero carbs. Try googling Sweetzfree, I believe that is the brand.

I just looked it up and that is one expensive sugar fix. The only reason I have spenda at all is because when I go to fix up my plain skim latte at star bucks I... take a few extra. o.O
I guess I won't be having lattes anymore anyways, so... I'll try and make my afternoon drink a tea with a singly packet of splenda from now on. What I'm wondering now though is this: splenda is probably marketing themselves as zero calories to all of the other food companies they sell to, so are those companies not accounting for any of the extra carbs splenda adds to their foods? Now I'm all paranoid. What if my low-carb milk isn't really just 4 net carbs and however many calories? What if my diet cokes have been slowly adding up and thats the real reason people who drink more diet soda gain weight? Oh noes...

I love the liquid Splenda/Sweetzfree. Yes, it's a small chunk of cash to put out at once...but one two ounce bottle lasts me for 4-5 months - and I bake a lot and drink a lot of coffee!
The way you are eating the granular Splenda right now, you are getting at least 9 extra carbs a day. That would have killed my induction efforts!!!

Off topic, but... what the heck can you bake thats low carb? Other than a fritatta, which I can't imagine you're adding splenda to.

I also cringed and paid the price for the Sweetzfree. Worth every dime! A little goes a VERY long way, and it adds up to NOTHING on the ol' carb-o-meter! Worth it to me. I can make up a half-gallon of plain Kool-Aid with 1/4 teaspoon of the stuff and it's just right, maybe a little too sweet! Makes the daily water requirement easy, tasty, and still carb-free!

Well now that I'm positive I'm serious about this I may as well order a one-oz bottle. Now I'm making this diet an official investment, so I better stick to it!

Sounds like you have the stuff (pardon the pun! Sweetzfree and the resolve) to make this work for you! Good luck! You won't regret the investment!

Thanks. I really think they should put that on the box. The word "No" in front of "calories and carbs" is misleading. Again, I'm wondering how many calories and carbs there really must be in diet soda and other sugar-free products that probably count the "zero" that splenda gives them. They could just multiply the zero by five if they put in five packets, and still have "zero" carbs. But that wouldn't be accurate.

You're welcome. I completely agree. I can't remember where I read this, but I heard that diet sodas sweetened with Splenda don't have any carbs because they use liquid Splenda. The granular stuff is coated or bulked up with sweeteners that have calories and carbs, but sucralose itself doesn't, as someone else mentioned here.

Sodas and other beverages use the liquid version of splenda so they really do have 0 carbs.
As far as baking, there are tons of things that can be baked that are low carb. Cheesecakes and flourless chocolate cakes are the first 2 that come to mind but I have baked all kinds of things. Muffins made with flax and nut meal, cakes with LC bake mix or with nut meals, custards etc.
Check out the sweet treats section for some good ideas.

By far, most diet sodas are (seems to me, anyway) sweetened with aspartame. Hard to find any more than a few that aren't -- Diet Rite, plus Diet Coke with Splenda are the only two I can find here. If anyone can find any others, please let me know!

I believe Pepsi One uses Splenda also. Not quite sure though. As far a baking with splenda.........like My Journey says.....there are tons of recipes you can bake using splenda. Bawdy's Cheesecake is absolutely delicious. Check it out in the "sweet treats" forum. I think the packets of splenda are more concentrated than the box of granular splenda. I believe one packet is equal to 2 teaspoons of the granular. If you are going to use the packets when baking.....make sure you take this into consideration. For instance, if the recipe calls for 8 teaspoons of granular splenda.....I would only use 4 packets. Otherwise your recipe will come out way too sweet. I actually use even less than the called for "granular" amount because I find if I add what is called for.....sometimes I you can get that Splenda aftertaste which I don't care for.

first if the splenda didn't kill your induction efforts the skim lattes are sure to since they use more than a 1/2 cup of skim milk. if you absolutely need it use heavy cream instead of skim milk.
secondly, i use stevia drops in combination with splenda so i don't eat too much splenda and when combining the two it takes away that sweetner after taste that is so nasty. i'm fixing to order the liquid splenda online today but having been using bulk. right now i eat probably 6 carbs worth of sweetners a day in all my coffee drinks which i want to stop so i'm excited about my liquid splenda.
i did buy the davinci syrups which have the 0 carbs because it's liquid splenda and when i whip up whip cream i add the white chocolate to it to give it a great taste with less carbs. the syrups are really great and many flavors to choose from. just go to netrition.com

I appreciate the information on Splenda....and Sweetzfree. I had no idea that there was a liquid version of Splenda....and without the carbs. I think I will take the plunge....invest the $$$ and give it a try. The way I see it....it is less money than I was spending on junk food loaded with carbs!!! Take care! Hang in there! LC is the way to go!!!

Hi -- I logged onto the Sweetzfree.com website. It looks like there is such a demand for the product that the window for orders only opens on certain dates. The next date they are accepting orders is on March 1 beginning at 8am ET. So, I have tagged myself a reminder. I think I will give it a try. Take care! Kim

I like the Da Vinci syrups too -- I find the best price at
www.lollicupstore.com. I was able to get each bottle for $4.99 each, and the vanilla was only $3.99. Best prices I could find on the net. Wish I could find them locally!

I am so glad I saw this thread!!! I have been using the Splenda packets only because I didn't realize that the liquid sweetener made with Splenda has zero carbs!!! Yay--I already have a sugar-free flavor syrup made with Splenda at home, so I don't even have to go shopping today. :)
Seriously, this info made my day!!!

in addition to sweetzfree, you could also use liquid sweet and low which many grocery stores carry, and torani or davinchi sugar free flavored syrups, all for zero carbs.
torani and davinchi can be purchased at
cost plus imports
ross
cash and carry
some grocery stores
some coffee shops
smart and final
netrition.com
torani and davinchi are great for making sweet treats
you could also use settet leaf, aka stevia but look carefully. the liquid version is zero carb, there is a version with fiber you can deduct, there is straight sweetleaf, and there is some with fillers.

I remember when I was on a diet a bit over a year ago and I would eat splenda raw all the time to quench my sugar cravings. My sugar cravings would never really be quenched though. Yet I still bought huge boxes of the packets to use. But if you think about it, one of those small 100-packet mini boxes contain 400 calories total! All empty calories. Not good for any diet really.

I thought I read in the Atkins book that for every serving of artificial sweetner you were to count that as 1 carb. So 1 serving of diet soda=1carb; 1 packet of splenda=1carb is that right?

it depends. things that use liquid splenda have no fillers so it isn't adding any carbs. pourable splenda in the packets and equal, do have carbs. count as 1 carb per packet, or for pouraBLE SPLENDA - 24 carbs per cup
packets - 1 carb each
pourable - 24 carbs per cup
liquid splenda (sweetzfree, trishz ) - zero carb
sugar free torani and davinchi syrups - zero carb
i'm not sure about the liquid sweet and low now but i am pretty sure it is zero carb.
my impression on the soda was that many people count it as one because caffiene and artificial sweetener is supposed to be limited anyway.
bewareful that some diet sodas may have a couple of carbs
i think fresca has one if i'm not mistaken. it seems to be mostly the ones that contain citrus.
hope that helps some :)

So are you all saying that it's better for me to use my da vinci syrups to sweeten that just the powder splenda?? Heck if that's so then I can easily do that even for my coffee! I have been adding the syrup to my mock danish so I might as well cut the splenda out on that too.

yep, it is unless you happen to have liquid splenda to use in it's place. i am so hooked on sweetzfree that i'm counting the days until the next order window. even though i love equal, it is rotting away in the cupboard because the sweetzfree doesn't have carbs and my beloved equal does.

How about caffiene free diet soda? I don't do caffiene anyway so it isn't that big of a jump.

you could try it. caffiene or not is one of those ymmv things, your mileage may vary. some people get stalled on caffiene, some people get stalled on artificial sweeteners, and some people have a reaction to different artificial sweeteners, mainly splenda and equal it seems. i've done caffien through the entire process as have many others, but just as many do not, or find they have to cut soda for onr of the aformentioned reasons, or perhaps because it inteferes with intake of other needs, or causes cravings.
