:help:
I keep seeing in a lot of recipes they call for protein powder. Where can I find this and what brand do you suggest? Can we make shakes out of this? I don't know much about the protein powers at all.
Thanks,
Lisa

oh anywhere. I get mine from bodybuilding.com. You can get it at grocery stores now. The most common type is whey protein, but some use caesin, soy, milk, or egg protein too.

I use whey protein powder-no soy. It comes in different flavors. I haven't used it to cook with, but I suppose you could. I use mine strictly for shakes. Just make sure when you buy some that it is low carb. I buy mine at Sams and nutrition stores. Hope this helps.

I usually buy a brand at Walmart called Body Fortress. They can be used to make shakes.
There are unflavored protein powders available - you might need to seek out someplace else, like a drug store or GNC that carries a lot of different types of protein powders.
Some brands taste better than others, so you'll have to experiment to see which you like the best. Also be sure to check the ingredients label and carb counts - not all brands are sugar free.

I use SportPharma Whey Protein from Costco. Sweetened with Splenda, so be aware of the carb count. It's okay for shakes, but usually I use it as an ingredient in muffins and cereal.

I stay away from the soy based protein personally (in any form). As a dude with muscle retention goals, the possible estrogenic effects of soy outweigh any benifits. I am a guy though, and I personally like whey and meat better than soy and tofu :)

It is funny that you said that. My family enjoys my low carb fried chicken that I make with soy four. My son looked at me and asked..."ugh, this isn't gonna make me...ugh" I said "grow breasts" he then said yeah  Actually I learned that soy causes more harm than good for everyone and I avoid it altogether now.

yeah, small amounts are found in a lot of stuff, but a lot less that sources like tofu, soy protein, and soy flour. it is just something I avoid, i don't preach for others to avoid it at all costs because there is so much debate. I don't think the benifits of it (however legit they are) are worth the possible downsides personally.

Hi
I have always understood soy is really good for you. What is wrong with soy?

What about soy protein? I thought vegetarians gain their protein from soy mostly even on induction, do they?

Like msundie83 said, 'I don't preach for others to avoid it because theres so much debate.'
I am personally trying to avoid it as much as possible until there is further proof of its effects/bennefits. If you want to know some of the 'studys' so far, just do a google search.
This thread was originally posted in regards to protein powder. It is possible if a discussion is going to be started reguarding soy, someone needs to start a new thread.
There are lots of people on this board who use soy. There was no offense intended when I stated we do not use soy. I am not telling others not to use it. I stated that I use soy free protein powder. I also try to buy foods with little or no soy in it. It is just our personal choice.

Personally I like Designer Whey. It makes truly awful shakes, but works amazing in cooking. I can buy it at my local albertsons store, and for a while could get it in the pharmacy section of my Walmart. Netrition.com

Can anyone reccomend an egg protein powder? I can't use any that come from dairy and I won't use soy.

I just use whey protein powder. I googled egg protein powder and got well over a million hits!
From the two sites I looked at, it seems to cost about the same as the whey protein I buy from netrition.com. From a bodybuilding site, I learned that it's pretty much just powdered whole eggs, and that it takes from 1 1/2 to 3 hours to digest, just like any other form of eggs. I can buy powdered whole eggs, as well as powdered egg whites, at my local supermarket.
There seem to be some well-known brand names -- known for their vitamin/mineral supplements -- associated with egg protein powder online, so I think you could just pick one that is familiar to you and not do too badly. However, if you have a health food, nutrition, or whole foods type store near you, I suggest you check there before you order online. You might be able to buy smaller amounts at a time that way. Online, it seems to only come in 1 kg containers.
HTH!

Hi

Like I said above...many people aiming to keep or build a lot of lean mass avoid soy because there is some evidence to show it may raise estrogen levels. This of course is only really important for men (and women with certain unique goals). Like you've heard, there is also some evidence to show that soy has a lot of benifits. I've heard about all the cholesteral and "heart healthy" related benifits, but I really have not problem keeping my heart healthy with diet and exercise. I don't think soy is a vital part of a diet especially considering the possible downsides. I can skip the tofu (even though I have grown fond of it in past years).

I can tell you from my experience, that if my period is heavy, just a little soy is all it takes to get things more under control. Also helps me when I have cramps. The benifits during TOM last only about 2 days, then I have to eat a little more soy. I like it in the Hot N Sour soup at the Chinese place I go to, but soy can take a lot of getting used to. I don't use it that much, but once a while helps me out.

Jay Robb has a nice Egg protein powder..but it is fat free because it is made from egg whites, so I'd add some fat to my shakes in the form of cream, coconut oil or swallow some fish oils along with it
I like a blend of egg, whey and casein which gives you a nice blend of fast, medium and slow acting proteins, which are ideal for a meal replacement.
Biotest Low Carb Grow,Dorian Yates PPowder, Problend 55, Muscle Milk( I believe) are all blends.
Soy? My 2 cents..stay as far away from it as you can. Estrogen, Phytates and thyroid supressing properties are only the beginning for this bad and incomplete source of protein.
