I have a question and hopefully someone can answer it. Okay, a couple years ago when I did LC I could find the low carb. Russel Stover candy. Now all I find it the sugar free which says made with splenda. Question is can I count it the same way that the LC was counted, carbwise that is. For example, the Pecan Delites show like 27 carbs. 2 fiber and 25 sugar alcohol. (not looking at package so these might be off but I know when I subtract the fiber and sugar alcohol it comes out to either zero or 1). So by doing it that way am I safe like I was with the low carb???
By the way, I've not found that I can order it online but I bought some of the Sugar Free at Wal-Mart and wanted to use it up first.
Thanks for the help!

Hmm, just found this on here so hopefully it's the same!
Take the number of sugar alcohols
+Fiber grams & add together
-Total from the total carbohydrates
= number of carbohydrates you are consuming per serving

It depends somewhat on which sugar alcohol you're talking about. Most sf chocolate candy, or sf chocolate-coated candy, is made with malitol. Roughly half the malitol we eat is absorbed into our bodies, so technically, only half of the carbs from it should be deducted.
In addition, a few people (such as myself) can eat large amounts of sugar alcohols and experience only very little, if any, of the negative effects they have on most people. I believe my body digests them just like any other carbohydrate, so I do not subtract them at all.
There are many different sugar alcohols (also known as polyols.) I have a whole file about them, including how many calories each contains. If you're interested in learning more about them, I suggest you Google both "sugar alcohols" and "polyols." :)

i have a hard time with sugar alcohols too. not only does my body process them just like regular sugar, but my system will get so sensitized to anything sweet that any other artificial sweetener will also trigger an insulin response in me. when i was lowcarbing 8 years ago, i started using stuff with sugar alcohols in them, and that probably explains why i put on about 10lbs before i got pregnant.
now, i stay as far away from them as possible. my body has "recovered" so i can have splenda, aspartame, or whatever with no effects, but i'm never touching the sugar alcohols again.

I never had any problems with them best I know. I just cannot recall if this is how they were listed on the LC or not. I'm wondering if the LC and sugarfree aren't the exact same just different labels on the front?

I checked the russell stover candy we get here (very limited l/c anything in UK) it said that the chocolate is sweetened with malitol then sucralose (splenda) was much further down the ingredients, is there malitol on the ingredient list for your candy, the reason i'm asking is that it certainly appears that more people have trouble with malitol than do with splenda.

According to my math (risky, at best)
RS sugar free pecan delight: (one piece)
Calories-65
Carbs-7.5
Fiber-1.5
net carbs-6.0
RS Net Carb pecan delight: (one piece)
Calories-30
Carbs-5.5
Fiber-.5
Net carbs-5.0
Not much difference, except for the calories. But interesting that they didn't just change the label and up the price for the Net Carb line.
Again, don't put too much trust in my math....

On the pecan delites the first ingredient is malitol... reads (consists of chocolate candy malitol) On the front of the pkg. it says Splenda but on the ingredients Splenda is not listed unless it is broken down there.
Here is what my pkg. shows
Serving Size 3 pieces
Cal. 190
Sat. Fat 7g
Trans Fat 0g
Cholesterol less than .5mg
Sodium 40mg
Total Carbohydrate 23g
Dietary Fiber 4g
Sugars 0g
Sugar Alcohol 18g
Protein 3g
Okay what I did was take the Tl. carb of 23 and subtract 4 for the fiber and 18 for the sugar alcohol which makes it 1 CARB.
I know that is how they did on the LC brand but I just don't know if it's the same with this sugar free stuff!
Thanks for your help and hopefully I will get this straight soon. A couple years ago this woe was sooooooooo easy with all the LC products on the market! I lost 65 lbs. in less than 4 months at the age of 45 and felt wonderful. Got off track when my military hubby returned from deployment and that was a DUMB thing to do.

TarHeel,
I bet you have the bigger ones. What I have are the little ones in the bag.

I don't have any of them. I looked online. The info was for the 3.5 ounce bags,

You know, the sugar free info may have been for the two piece pack....and as I remember, they are bigger than the ones in the bags. If so, there's really not much difference at all unless people have problems with small amounts of sugar alcohols.

My grocery stores still carries the net carb russel stover candy in the healthier foods section, so its still available. I didnt notice much of a difference labelwise on them when I compared them, so I use the sugar free kind as an occasional treat.
