Lisa- from what I am able to understand, you were once on some diabetic medication and were able to come off. I found this in an earlier thread.

I quit taking it (with my doctor's blessing) because I didn't need it any longer to keep my blood sugars in line and it didn't seem to be doing anything to aid my weight loss, so I didn't see the sense in continuing to pay for it and take it.

You've probably related this story many times over, but I would be very interested in hearing how you were able to do this. If this has been answered somewhere, I'd appreciate you directing me to the thread.

Of course, I'd love to hear from anyone who was able to discontinue the use of medications. In specific, I'd like to know how long you were on it, how much were you taking, what determined that you could now come off, what numbers are you getting being off and if coming off was done suddenly or a gradual lesseining of meds.

Charran, after about a month to 1 1/2 months on metformin, I started going low (below 70) in the afternoon so cut back by half on my dose and eventually quit taking it altogether. I was never on an extremely high dose (1,000 mg. XR daily) so I first went to 500 mg. XR daily and then stopped.
AFAIK, there aren't any serious dangers with quitting Metformin cold turkey. With some drugs, there are cautions not to stop taking it suddenly but Metformin isn't one of those.
The only thing I would suggest you watch for is a rebound rise in your blood glucose but considering your symptoms, I'd be more concerned about that than a few days of higher BG readings.

Thanks Lisa. Another of my concerns is this though...if the pain goes away and it was because of the Meformin, my doctor wants to put me on Gliclazide. I have been reading about it and I'm not too happy about that one at all. I have alot of concerns about that whole thing, which I'll have to discuss with him if that time comes. I've been off the Metformin for 2 days now and my BG readings are fine. I'm not sure if it takes awhile to see if they'll go up or not.
