My 82 year old mother is visiting me for 3 weeks. She has recently been diagnosed with diabetes and is very overweight. I have been a low carber for years and I find the diet she has been told to stick to does not make much sense given what I have learned about food and blood sugar levels. She is willing to try low carbing while she is here and I would like some advice on if this is a good idea and how strict to be.
Thanks

Lowcarbing is a good idea for anyone with diabetes. How strict you have to be depends on how your body responds to different amounts of carbs. If she is testing daily, then she will know how many carbs she can safely eat without raising her BG. Without testing, it's kind of hard to determine the level of strictness. Also, you should find out if she is on any kinds of medication for her diabetes. If she is, then she will have to pay extra careful attention so that her BG doesn't drop too low.

Give your mother Gretchen Becker's book on Diabetes: The First Year. That book helped me more than anything!
