Ok, I know the human male is unique in the species because of
the Y chromosome. Does the Y chromosome also occur in male
primates? Does the male of other animal species have a
similar unique chromosome? I guess what I'm looking for is
how far backward in the evolutionary tree does the Y
chromosome occur? -bob

All mammals use the X / Y system for sex determination. Birds
have a similar system, based on the W and Z chromosomes. It's
reversed in that the base is male and the sex chromosome
creates a female.
Reptiles and other animals have a wide variety of ways of
determining sex. There are numerous varieties of fish where
sex can change mid- life in response to social cues.
