I really do not want to quit caffeine.
What is considered excessive (as it says in the book) vs. moderate amounts?
Thanks

when you've named your children juan valdez, java, mocha, and espresso...
when you consider coffee beans a condiment...
people get dizzy just watching you...
when you can type 60wpm with your feet...
ok enough of that ;). i think "excessive" depends on the person. i have giant coffee cups both at home (it'll hold half a pot of coffee... no kidding) and at work (about 22oz) and i can easily go through 2 or 3 of those a day. i've never seen it have any effect on my lowcarbing, even though a lot of others have reported issues with it.
can you tell us how much you're drinking now?

yeah, Kvon, I think we all smiled at that one! Mommadog, I'm a newbie so I dont know what to tell you. I myself have been cutting back, to about 2 or 3 regular sized cups spread out throughout the day. (yeah, thats cutting back!)

Too much Diet Coke stalls me, whereas coffee (and lots of it) doesn't. Same deal with tea.
Oh, and hilarious post Kvon...

Kvon, what a great post! I literally laughed out loud! I'd love to know where you found those huge coffee cups. I have a friend who has been searching for a really big coffee cup for the past couple of years, and hasn't been able to find one.
Returning to the topic of the thread, I never completely gave up coffee. I drink about 16 ounces a day now, sometimes twice that, sometimes none. But somewhere during the first 6 months on my LC plan, the amount of coffee I drank on any given day just slowly decreased. I no longer wanted the 6 to 8 cups (48 to 64 ounces) that had been my "normal" amount for many years. I don't know if it was because I was drinking more plain water, or whether it was a side-effect of eating fewer carbs. (The latter might well have been the case, because I always had coffee with things like doughnuts, danishes, etc., which were no longer acceptable foods for me.) The amount of coffee I now drink hasn't seemed to interfere with my weight loss at all, although caffeine does appear to have that effect on some people.
One thing I will mention is that if you drink a really large quantity of coffee every day, be aware of the carb content of any cream, half & half, milk and sweeteners you add to it, unless, of course, you drink your coffee black. Even then, there is still debate over whether coffee, itself, contains carbs. Some authorities state it has 0 carbs per 6 ounces, whereas others state figures ranging from 0.8 to over 0.9 carbs per 6 ounce cup. Whether you choose to count the carbs in coffee might contain depends on how closely you track your daily carb intake. If you're in Induction, and coffee actually does contain ~1 gram of carbs per 6 ounces, it might make a big difference in your weight loss. On the other hand, if you're in OWL and have more leeway in the number of carbs you can have daily, it might be fine to count coffee as 0. The decision is entirely up to you. :)

Thanks, I've been looking for a really big mug (for my tea)
I've heard the diet cola doees stall because the chemicals make you crave sweets (the sweet taste starts this off).
My goal is to eventually switch to green tea (caffeinated in the AM and decaffeinated thereafter). Maybe by the end of the month.
IT's a personal choice, how it affects your body.

Well, I guess I'm a java amatuer because I don't drink near the amount of some!
I used to have a triple latte from starbucks, but now I made it a triple espresso with 1 oz of heavy cream. Same caffeine, but way less carbs.
Then I have a couple cups of regular coffee AND a 44oz diet soda (with caffeine).
I have not cut back at all (other than losing the milk due to carbs) and am losing 1 pound a day (yeah, I know, but I have very good digital scales at work and I can't resist).
Thanks
