Wow
Just ate a medium pastrami sub from a local
deli.it was loaded with pastrami and pickles.
Big wholewheat sub buns.
1 hour glucose reading: 252
2 hour: 204
Meat doesn't usually bother my glucose reading
very much but I guess this is definitely something
to avoid.I just took a break from exercising to
bring glucose level down.Back to the exercise
now.

"Ummm...Eddie that was a sub without the bun, right?"
Ate the whole huge thing.Big mistake.
Hour 3:BG=152
Regardless of what I do,my BG rarely decreases
by more than 50 points per hour.
Oh well.Another thing that I dearly love has to
be put my "absolutely not" list.
Diabetes is such a great fun condition.
NOT!!

probably was a big mistake. the bun for one and probably the processed meat. But the bread will increase your blood sugar drastically and quickly, the meat will provide ongoing longer acting. With diabetes a low carb diet will greatly improve and stabilize your blood sugars but amounts do matter as well. It is especially important to stabilize your blood sugars to avoid other complications which I am sure you know. It must be really frustrating but low GI foods are best. take care and good luck

I sometimes will have a piece of nature's Own
Wholewheat bread with a low carb meal and
glucose response is okay but the sub bun was
large.Maybe the pastrami and pickles on the
sandwich was the culprit. After my glucose peaked at 250+,it was down to 102 in 2.5 hours.I allow myself one or two carb indiscretions per month but I was suprised that
the glucose response was so bad.Live and learn.
Many thanks to all who responded.

Eddie,
If you miss sandwitch, why not make an "open face" (european way) on a thin slice of bread and pile as much meat, pickles (not sweat) and everything else you like? it will be much easier than eating huge sub with most likely sweat pickle and pastrami brined using brown sugar.
When DH wants a sandwich (very rare), I make panini. I buy the best italian chabatta cread I can find, slice very thin and on bias, and put chese, meat, veggies in between. Chabatta is very light bread, it has more holes than swiss cheese, and large thick slice is only 20 g carbs, while Sub's bun is a good 100 g. In this case processed white (not whole grain) bread is a better choice.
I make 2 huge paninies (double side) using only 20 g carbs. WE don;t have panini maker, so I just use grill pan.
I eat only one, so it is 10 g of carb plus 1-2 g from cheese and salad greens. Makes nice lunch with a side of green salad in summer, and does not impact my BGs.;)

Eddie, the average sub bun is probably closer to 4 servings of bread than one, so I suspect your spike had far more to do with the bun than what was on that bun. If you really miss the sandwich experience, a product you can try is FlatOut (http://www.flatoutbread.com/movie.html) sandwich wraps, but only the 'light' ones, not the regular. They're really large so half of one is usually plenty for me and they also make a pretty passable pizza crust or soft taco shell. :)
Each wrap is 16 grams of carb total but 9 of those are fiber and 1 is a sugar alcohol for a net carb count of 6 per wrap (and they really are large) or 6.5 if you count sugar alcohols as 'half carbs'.
Did I mention that the wraps are really large? ;)
The light wraps have no transfats and come in 3 flavors; Original, Italian Herb and Sundried Tomato.
One other product that would work along the same lines are La Tortilla Factory's (http://www.latortillafactory.com/jadworks/ltf/jwsuite.nsf/ViewSelection/4268019D4EFFAF018825723A0074F6FA?Open&site=Home*ViewSelection=Tortilla_Talk**mb) low carb wraps. I don't like them as much as the FlatOut, but tastes vary from person to person.
HTH! :)

Lisa
Thanks for the tip about flatout.
I'll see if it's available in Houston.
I do medium carb diet(50G or so per day)-
no tolerance for transfat, very little tolerance
for sugar.I don't completely avoid bread-
maybe 3 slices of Natures Own wholewheat
per day(5G of net carbs per slice).
The way you people end your posts with
abbreviations drives me crazy.
Oh,well...

Eddie, you might want to print the contents of this link (http://www.lowcarb.ca/tips/tips003.html) and hang it next to your computer; at least that way, they 'translation' is only a glance away.
As annoying as they are, internet abbreviations are here to stay, I'm afraid. ;)
If you can't locate FlatOut wraps in your area, you can purchase them directly from the company through the link I posted above. They freeze really well.

I am not big fan of La Tortilla low carb wraps, they taste rather rubbery and have too much soy. I did not try FlatOut, but I also use Oroweat, Carb Count, 9 g per slice minus 3 g fiber, taste decent toasted, but it is regular slice, not large. And of course, Scandinavian flat bread (high fiber crackers) works good too.
