I've lost track of a thread and I'm unable to find it now, maybe someone can put their finger on it. It was a thread around the time of the big e. coli in spinach scare that listed various cases of food poisoning and the food that caused the contamination. I remember the list was mostly vegetable matter. Anyway, I'm in a debate with someone and looking for that thread again. I'm googling like mad and can't find it.
If anyone finds it, let me know!

Nancy, was this thread (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=309712&highlight=coli) the one you were looking for?

No, I thought it might be too, but there was a link someone posted with a list of the sources of the contamination (strawberries, meat, spinach, etc) and number of cases. It showed that most of the cases of food borne illness are due to contaminated fruits and veggies, not meat.

Could have it been in Dr. Mike's blog?

the meat can be contaminated only if the butcher will pincture bowel, and only on the surface of meat. if you don't buy ground meat, and don't eat burgers in fast food placed, you have nothing to worry about. If the meat is cooked to 120 degress internally, it is enough to kill e-coli on the surface.
Now, the produce get contaminated if it is organically grown (fertilizers usage) or the water used for irrigation is contaminated by nearby ranch or dairy farm (e-cli is in the animal guts), and so is feces.
There is also a possibility that someone did not wash their hands after using bathroom, and then continue to pick strawberries or spinach!;)

Agreed--meat's pretty easy to manage, plus it cooks out, plus it does a pretty good job of stinking if it's dangerous.
Washing hands after picking fruit? C'mon! The people who work in the fields that I see would consider themselves lucky if the crew boss is providing toilet paper in the field. They don't get bathroom breaks with running water. Once the food's in a kitchen, it's a different situation, but I don't think our food safety people are inspecting harvest conditions.
