In January I am scheduled to begin 5 days of intensive medication, prior to Lyme Dot Blot Assay. Then I will begin at least medication for Babesia, but probably lyme also. Has anyone here been through these? What does it do to your diet? I understand it is common for flagyl to affect your taste receptors; have you found foods that stayed down well, and yet were low-carb?

Is this the correct forum for this topic?
Thx,

My sister-in law was on IV antibiotics for quite awhile for Lyme and Bartonella. I can't tell you if it affected her taste or ability to keep things down. She lost quite a bit of weight because of the disease, though. And she was told to drop sugar from her diet as part of her treatment. (I found that interesting!) Her treatment went on for nearly a year. I can tell you that life is definitely better for her now than before treatment.

Didn't have any trouble that I recall KEEPING food down with Flagyl; it just all tastes like you're eating it off really really cheap silverware.

Note: DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL while on Flagyl--it's the same reaction as antabuse. Be sure to check the clearance time for when you can safely consume alcohol after the course of meds.

Good luck.

I recently found out that I'm allergic (highly allergic) to Flagyl. That said, the first time I took it (back in the summer), I didn't really have a problem keeping foods down, but I did have that metallic taste thing going on.

I had other symptoms though, which I thought were mere side effects.

Fast forward to a recent dental infection, and I was prescribed Flagyl again, and had a violent reaction to the stuff. Apparently, if you're allergic, you might get mild allergy symptoms the first time, but then if you take it again, you'll get much, much worse symptoms.

Why am I bothering to mention this? Only to say that if you get any weird 'side effects' that don't jive with the list of possible side effects on your prescription handout thingy, be sure to mention this to your doctor.

Flagyl didn't interfere with weight loss, and it certainly works for infections. Pay attention to the alcohol warnings - as cs carver said, they're serious warnings.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

PS - on edit: just to clarify - I didn't have to change my low-carb diet while taking Flagyl last time, things just tasted a wee bit weird at times.
