Supplements that Protect Against Diabetes
A wholesome diet lays the foundation for resisting diabetes. However, many individual supplements can enhance the body's ability to manage glucose and insulin.
Alpha-lipoic acid. Used for years in Germany to treat diabetics, alpha-lipoic acid can greatly improve insulin function. This nutrient (found in spinach and beef) works in two ways: it helps the body breakdown and burn glucose for energy and, as an antioxidant, it protects against complications of diabetes, such as nerve damage.
Vitamin E. This powerful antioxidant reduces the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease, all diseases strongly associated with diabetes. Some research shows that it can reduce blood sugar and improve insulin function. Select natural vitamin E - d-alpha tocopherol (-yl) on the label - which is twice as potent as the synthetic form.
Vitamin C. This vitamin's similar chemical structure to glucose leads to their competition for absorption. Indeed, the same proteins that carry glucose into cells also carry vitamin C. Extra vitamin C appears to correct insulin resistance and diabetes-related inflexible blood vessels, according to a recent study by Japanese researchers.
Chromium. A joint U.S./Chinese study of 180 people with type 2 diabetes found that 1,000 mcg of chromium picolinate daily brought glucose and insulin levels almost back to normal after only four months. This mineral is part of the "glucose tolerance factor," which helps insulin move glucose into cells for burden.
Ginseng. Two recent studies by Vladimir Vuksan, Ph.D., of the University of Toronto, have found that American ginseng (Panax ginseng) can greatly lower glucose levels in both diabetics and nondiabetics. In treating diabetics, he found that 3 grams of whole ground ginseng root lowered post-meal glucose levels by about 20 percent in diabetics. In a study of 10 healthy subjects, Vuksan found that 3, 6 or 9 grams of ginseng, taken 40 minutes to two hours before a large dose of sugar, reduced the glucose response by 26, 29, and 38 percent, respectively. He noted that ginseng might be useful in preventing the progression of elevated glucose to full-blown diabetes.
Silymarin. This antioxidant extract of milk thistle (Silybum marianum), is widely used to enhance function of the liver, an organ that works with the pancreas to regulate glucose levels. Italian researchers found that 600 mg daily of silymarin, reduced glucose in diabetics by 9.5 15 percent over 12 months. The patients also benefited from lower levels of sugar in the urine, glycated hemoglobin (an indicator of glucose damage to cells), and insulin requirements.

You should look into Bitter Melon and Gymnema sylvestre.
These 2 along with Alpha Lipoic Acid are top notch IMO

I take Gymnnema Sylvestre in a separate pill and the bitter melon is in a combination pill which has other herbs in it also.... but I surely never heard of silymarin........
Actually, I put my vitamins, minerals, herbs and amino acids aside for a while to experiment with a liquid formula that is supposed to be a whole food and complete nutrient, but after a week on it, I'm feeling like it is just bunk and I'm about to ditch it all and go back to my regular line of supplements but I might add that silymarin.

I love Milk Thistle. I have to take testosteron injections and I take it to help keep my liver enzymes from elevating. It is also excellent for smokers and alchoholism.
silymarin also contains a flavanoid which is good for alleviating depression.

Bitter melon has helped me more than anything.
Cinnamon is supposed to be great but it's not
obvious to me if it's really done me any good.
Early morning aerobic exercise helps me a lot.
Cheers!

I found the below article at a website and I never heard of "silymarin". Is there anyone taking this and what kind of results are you having???
These listed supplements are not protecting from diabetes, but may help against diabetes complications.
I took basically every herbal and no supplements claim to "improve blood glucose and reverse diabetes" alone and in combination with other herbs and supplements, and did not see any results worth reporting. Sylimarin is one of them, and it is sought to be helfull for liver problems, but my liver enzymes are always in normal range anyway, and it did not help a bit with blood sugar.
As for ALA, it impacts my sensitive stomach, causing burning and pain. Ultimately, I don't agree with taking mega-doses of any supplements, especially antioxidants like ALA. It also should be taken with Biotin. Cinnemon is another supplement that almost gave me peptic ulcers, not sure how other folks can take it 3 times daily.
Gymnema was useless, and I took 4 g twice a day for 6 months at least, no changes in BGs.
Bitter melon I haven't tried by itself, but as a part of Glucobetic, and still, no effect. GTF chromium was waste of money, and made me gain weight rather than lose. Siberian ginseng did not affect my BGs much but is the best herbal tonic IMO, especially if one is recovering from illness or surgery. Beware if you have elevated BP, it can make it worse.
I think that vitamins should be obtained from proper nutrition, and diet and exercise work the best for Bgs control.

So, does this mean you don't believe in herbal products? :)
I put myself on a vitamin, mineral, herbal and amino acid supplement schedule. Without exercise and prior to beginning a LC lifestyle, it alleviated my diabetic symptoms. It reversed my diabetes neuropathy, it brought my BG levels to borderline normal. By just adapting to LC dieting along with the supplements, brought my diabetes under complete control.
My only complaint is I've been looking at 10-15 pills each morning and each evening. I am on my 9th day of putting all my supplements aside and trying a product that is liquid and just one ounce in the morning and one ounce in the evening and I am supposed to get all the same benefits as the supplements I was taking. Well, guess what, it ain't working. I can feel the neuropathy creeping back and my FBG was improving the first few days on this stuff, but now it is elevated just above normal. I am going back on my supplements!!
I am sorry it didn't work for you. I have to say, it did for me!!!

Excellent cajun boy. I love hearing things like that!
If I may make a suggestion on your neuropahty, take Methylcobalmin instead of your b-12. It is a better abosrbed b-12.
alos to cut back on some stuff, Solaray has a product called Glucoreg and it has just about all of what you are taking. I'm not sure what the doses are of each, but it it a great all in one product for regulating blood sugar.

About my earlier post in which I mention my supplements. Those dosages are for the day's totals. Most of the supplements are taken 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night. Some are taken either morning or night. The only reason for not taking any particular supplement at one time is to improve absorption. I could take some at noon, making it spread over 3 times daily, but I'm on the road too much during the day and tend to forget the noon dosage, thus, twice daily works for me to a suitable degree.....

So, does this mean you don't believe in herbal products? :)
Oh, I do, actually, I did, I spent fortune on vitamins and suppleemnts, taking handfull 3 times a day to the point that my digestion was greately impacted.
I only stated that none of them made a real difference in my BGs control, diet since you asked to share experience;)
It could be that my numbers were borderline normal already, with the exception of prominent DP that no supplement seem to be helped with.

this is what I did with the exception that I did not have complication, my diabetes was cought in time and did not progress since then, actually, knowing that I have it made and slighly changing my diet, keeps in FBG is better range now.
My only complaint is I've been looking at 10-15 pills each morning and each evening. I could nto tolerate this amount of pills taken 3 x daily, and I also read a lot about hiow our body becomes additivie to external vitamins, and gets lazy to extract them from food. I also contracted mild gastirits that was indeed caused by ALA, vitmains C, etc. Now I am off all supplements, and don;t see any difference in my numbers. BBut I sitill have 2 drawers full of this stuff. Since I buy onlu USP rade to assure adequate strength and purity, it it was cost effective too.
Glad it worked for you.:)

I am still new at all this and the diet I am trying to follow is by Barry Groves, PhD. His book is "Eat Fat, Get Thin". He says that on his diet plan, there are enough nutrients in the foods that he doesn't believe supplements are even necessary. I am going to be taking them for now, no ill effects and I do see improved results, but I am hoping for a time after my weight loss and during the rest of my life on maintenance, I hope to experiment with not taking any supplements and watch my numbers. I do get blood tests done every 90 days, so I will be able to do it for at least a 90 day period.

Beware of the combo pills.
They usually contain insufficient amounts of popular
supplements.Glucobetic is a good example of this.
Never came across a combo pill that worked.

Dr Bernstein did state that. However, I take that to be true only if vitamin C was used in and of itself. The fact remains that people on high doses/with high amounts of C in thier bodies have a host of benefits more important than lowering BG readings.
Vitamin C is a powerful tool in boosting your immune system so your body can go about the business of fixing itself. thaty and you probably will rarely get sick.
Also, if one experiences loose stools and irritate your stomach, either back of on the dosage or switch brands. One cannot just start taking 1400 mg a day out of the blue. And mega dosing to me is closer to a couple grams a day. Ester C or a natural C not the cheap ru of the mill stuff at the local mega mart.
Also it sounds to me like your body is really sensitive to a lot of things, I truly hope you find a combination of things that works for you.

True.
Your post points out quite well, the need to use a quality suppliment. Sometimes the combos are just the ticket and work well. Sometimes, as is the case for me, you cannot get a combo in the right amounts of each suppliment for your needs/goal.
And as with all lower priced supps, and a few high priced ones, watch out for the extras they cram in there.

I take 4g pf vitamin C per day. Mega dosing? Dr Linus Pauling did more research on vitamin C than most, if not more than anyone else. There is a University in Oregon named after him. He believed that vitamin C could be safely and effectively taken up to 18g per day, if I remember the numbers correctly.... You might want to search this out, as there are claims that mega doses of vitamin C is healthy........

My A1c 9 months ago was 9.0 and my last A1c (taken 3 weeks ago) was 5.8
For diabetic control I take (2 times a day) -
Alpha Lipoic Acid - 400mg
Folic Acid - 800
GTF Chromium - 600
Gymnema Sylvestre - 500
Cinnulin PF - 125
Fenugreek- 750
Boswellia - 300
I also take other supplements including Antarctic Pure Krill Oil and use good healthy spices in my cooking. I know you can't always get the full vitamin benefit from foods or spices but I think if we as diabetics learn to make the better choice in foods it will 'help' to level out BG regulations.

I use Fitday, making sure I match RDA requirements but mostly important to track my calories, carbs, calcium and potassium. I am a bit paranoid to make sure I get enough potassium, I started getting heart palps if I cut carbs too low, and unfortunately, fruits contain the most potassium.

Oh, no argument from me there! I was really reacting to the thought that what I am taking is/was considered mega dosing. In my mind you are mega dosing, yet I still see no harm in your doses consumed either.
I guess my point was, if a person were to start ingesting 4 grams a day from nothing, you'd be doing the 50 yard outhouse dash in short order!

He may essentially be absolutely correct. However, in the case of veggies with pesticides and depletion of soil nutrients etc... and the hormones, antibiotics and feeds animals are given, these days there is probably no harm on up to enough reason to suppliment even with Dr Groves WOE.
In fact, I'd go a step further. If you start out with health issues, suppliments (I feel) are critical to getting your body back to square one to be able to properly absorb the nutrients in your food and to repair itself.
A race car is an awesome machine, but you don't hop in and expect it to run full throttle with a flat tire, a missing carb and low oil.....neither should one expect to stop eating junk food and start eating like Dr Groves reccomends without the aid of supps..
Also, the human body is a wonderful thing, it will take what it needs of most suppliments and let the rest fly through.

I agree 100%. I follow that diet pretty closely. I still take my supplements............err on the side of caution....
and to your other comment, yes, you don't wake up one morning and start taking mega doses of anything. You make small increases, watch what happens for a while, then slowly increase and watch some more.

You mentioned neuropathy. I have some loss of sensation in my lower left leg. I had heard about benfotiamine on the Bernstein forum. One person has had good success with her liver health after taking it. I read up on the benfotiamine site about people saying it improved their neuropathy too. I've been taking it for about 2 weeks now. I think it is helping, but not sure yet.
Benfotiamine is a synthetic and more bio available form of B1, thiamine. Helps nerve health, sciatica, nephropathy, polyneuropathy and other things Helps for anti-aging. (I'm turning 50 next year so I'm all for anti-aging!).

TCM= Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Nervous System
Depression. Mood changes such as anger and irritability. Metaphysically the liver is known as the “seat of anger”. Poor concentration and “foggy brain”. Overheating of the body, especially the face and torso. Recurrent headaches (including migraine) associated with nausea.

Are you working with a homeopathic doctor. If so, then great.
My concern with supplements is the same as for taking prescribed drugs; the side effects. Some supplements have really dangerous side effects. I am not expert on them for sure. I do take vitamins and minerals, but I would want to learn a lot more before going all out with them.
I also know that prescribed drugs have some nasty side effects as well. At least the FDA alledgely has tested and made prudent decisions on them and we all know that isn't true all the time.
Thanks.

Thanks for the list...I like things nice and tidy. I'm taking 3/4s of these already. What brand of "diabetes multi-vit" do you take? And, do you use mail order (ie. Puritan) or local drug store? Thanks, John
