Hey all - I had some minor surgery on Thursday and I'm very swollen in the area where the stitches are (a considerable amount of stitches). Please tell me that the swolleness is the cause of these extra 5 pounds? right? Just want some reassurance.......

Your swelling may or may not be associated with the five pounds of weight gain... but the good news is that if you had an IV of dextrose water, then it's probably just water weight.

Hope you feel better soon... :there:

There was a thread not too long ago where we talked about all the things that can cause temporary weight gain after surgery. Can't remember the title.

I'm sure your body just needs to readjust from the shock. Watch to make sure you're healing right, keep drinking water and I'm sure it'll come back off in no time. Get well soon!

I'm guessing water weight too. The stitches itself should not make an impact on weight gain, but if you had an IV which all surgeries I ever had to have...then chances are it's your body holding the water.

Just give yourself time to heal. :)

Dr Atkins gained a lot of weight while in a coma, being fed IV fluids only. Ringers Lactate is commonly used as an IV. The solution is water, salt and sugar. The salt and sugar pull the water into muscles leading to WEIGHT gain, not Fat gain. The stress of surgery could be causing gluconeogenesis, another way for sugar to be adding water weight.
