Vitamin C and zinc have been proven to lessen the time it takes to get over a cold. Peppers are a good lowcarb source of Vit C. Zinc is found in a lot of foods; nuts to shellfish.

'Jewish Penicilin' ( aka chicken soup) never hurts.

soups are best in cold. Use pepper in food instead of red chilli powder. Try to avoid medicines.
Inhale steam is the best option.

There are some medicines that are safe to take though- the body ointment like Vic's vaporub and similar rubs that attract blood and warmth to the affected neck and chest areas help speed healing, I find, without any side effects like the symptom-relieving meds.

Also, I forget exactly why, but there is truth to the old wive's tale that chicken soup- pref. homemade not canned (i.e. full of garbage, starch, etc) has some biochemical effects in loosening up congestion.

Vitamin C- buffered or ester C if one has a sensitive gut- helps boost immunity. Don't bother with OJ, because even if on is not on a LC WOE, the sugar is a food for pathogens.

Home made slowly simmered chicken soup with ginger, cayen pepper, fennel, and other herbs and spices, and lots of garlic, etc. Drink the broth and eat chicken when hungry.
