Hey there folks….
Had two quick questions for everyone.
1.) For several years now, I have had mildly to extremely foaming urine. No mater what time of day, what I’ve eaten, or how much water I have consumed. I’ve read somewhere that it is a sign of protein in the urine. The article said this was a bad thing. I am healthy as a horse and haven’t had more than a cold here and there in the past several years. More curious than I am concerned. Any ideas?
2.) I will be getting a fasting cholesterol test next week as part of my company’s “live healthy program”. I am an avid low carber. I have only broken my low carb lifestyle 2 times in 2+ years, and both times I threw up. The sugary desert binge resulted in the food coming back up about as quick as I had eaten it. A couple hours later, all was fine. Is there anything I need to tell the nurse before taking this test?
Thanks folks.

#1, I checked briefly into a forum about this and there were no affirmative answers confirming any illness. Seeing a nephrologist and a kidney ultrasound were reccomended. There was something said about a butterfly rash on the cheeks. Do you have this? The one guy, who posted a very similar question to yours said that he had his urine tested for protein there was none.
2. I personally see no need to inform the nurse about your dietary lifestyle since it is healthy. You said that you were healthy as a horse, right. Now when you get your results back, then brag about your lifestyle.

Hmmm....my DH's urine is a little foamy, but I always assumed it was the distance it travels to the water! :)

Same here, Elle. I too assumed the same.

Healthy as a horse? Well they tend to have foaming urine too. :-) A cholesterol check isn't going to address urinary symptoms. It can't hurt to get a urinalysis at the same time.

Foaming urine is a sign of protein in the urine which means the kidneys aren't functioning right. Better get that checked.
You don't need to do anything special for your cholesterol test, except fast for 12 hours. :)

Thanks for helping out folks. Hate going to the doctor, but I suppose most folks do. I’ll make an appointment soon and let you know the results. If something’s wrong, it’s been wrong for a couple of years now. Kind of worrisome.

Also... it's a sign of peeing in a bowl with cleaner still left in it. :p

It does not hurt to get it out checked out ... but think about it.
I assume you are like me. Most of what you eat is protein. So of course your protein levels in your body, blood, and urine are going to be higher than most people that consume very little protein and mostly high glycemic foods (i.e. the typical western diet).
My "health experts" get all excited when they check for protein levels in my blood or urine. I explain all this to them -- and it means nothing. What the hell do I know? So I take the additional kidney and liver tests and they are dumb founded that they come back normal.

Healthy kidneys filter out protein its a sign of disease if they're not doing their job properly. The sort of thing you want to catch early! Someone with normal kidneys, even eating lots of protein, it isn't going to come out the urine.

yea, nancy's right. Healthy kidneys are not supposed to let protein pass. BUT it's not necesarily protein that's causing the foam. My son has always had foamy urine....he's 22 and perfectly healthy. (I first noticed his urine when he was about 5, he was tested and all's fine)

Have you started taking any medications? This includes vitamins. I've heard where sometimes starting medications can cause this. My DH does this sometimes, usually when he remembers to take his vitamins..
