Hey Guys :)

I went to the Doctor today and got blood test results.

Its only been 4 days that I've been eating the way I should eat, so I am really happy with the outcome, I've already lost 4 pounds. My Doctor says that all my stats are normal, and that 'I'm pretty healthy for an overweight smoker'. PFFT.

My doctor is actually a really funny, upfront guy, so I dont take offense to what he said, however, he did have to eat his words when I told him I was smoke free for 13 days now.

So, I am glad that everything is 'normal', but I am wondering what these tests were specifically. I have the paperwork with my results, can anyone help me break it down?

I can give you some feedback, and probably others here can give you even more  I assume you have your Total Cholesterol results, LDL, HDL, and Triglycerides, plus depending on what else was tested & if you fasted, your fasting blood glucose, with if there have been past issues or a concern, a HgbA1C.

Okay, lets see here, I'm going to give you guys some stats that I think are strange, and you tell me if you know what the heck they mean:

Para=
WBC 19.8 Normal = 4.8 - 10.8, I'm assuming this is white blood cells, its higher than the normal range, anyone dealt with this before?

Neut# 15.9 Normal = 1.4 - 6.5, No Idea what this means, but again, its high.

Neut% 80.2 Normal = 42.0 - 75.2

Lymp 16.0 Normal = 20.0 - 51.1

NA 142.9
K 4.06
CL 108.1
CO2_LC 20.9
ALP 73
AST 12
ALT 75
GLU 75
TBILI 1.0
TP 7.9
CREAT 0.6
BUN 7
ALB 4.4
TRIG 139
CHOL 148 (I'm assuming this is cholestrol)
HDL_CL 41
LDL_CL 79
VLDV 28
HGBA1c 4.9

Anyone? Why do doctors abbrevaite everything, makes it so much harder to look it up on WebMD

I really don't know much about that stuff, but I wanted to congratulate you first one the weight loss and also for being smoke free. I've been trying to quit smoking, but I can seem to make it more than a few days at most. :(

Looking good. Ask your doctor for a copy of your blood work. On the print out it will give you the norms for each test and indicate in some way if any of your results are out of range. WBC is white blood cells in general, neut. is neutrophils a subset/precurser of white blood cells, and lymph is lymphocytes which is another subgroup of white blood cells. You are showing a low grade inflammatory response. Perhaps you encountered a virus or bacteria you are responding to. Or you have low grade inflammation from poor diet - which low carb should help improve.

Thanks for the support guys, 4 pounds may not seem like a lot, but once you've fallen off the wagon, and then got back on, your first weight loss is a big exciting deal

You know, quitting smoking IS hard. Sometimes, its a minute by minute struggle, but you just gotta dig your heels in and grit your teeth, and try to remember, you dont NEED that smoke, you just really WANT it.

Oh you guys are a buncha little smarty pants, arent you? Thats what I love about this place, so many different people, all so varied, all chasing the same goal of self improvement. I dig it.. I'm starting to sound like a hippy.

Thanks for the help, I guess so long as I am looking alright, I am happy.

That is a very nice glucose and hgba1c! Your Triglycerides they want under 150 which yours is, your hdl should be over 40, but the higher the better, you really want to raise this. Your ldl they want under 100, so yours is good, and having your cholesterol level at 148 is also very good, as they want that to be under 200.

I agree with the previous poster re what the significance is of your slightly elevated white blood cell count including your neutrophil count.
