OK, I have done Atkins but fell off the wagon and am now up to 245.
How good does SB work? It seems a little less restricitve than Atkins.

I think it's less restrictive in some regards and more in others, but I'm not the one to offer advice to a newbie still new myself.

Good Luck! I bet it works for you!

I find SBD less restrictive. We eat good carbs and good fats. The Atkins folks eat more fats and less of the carbs that we eat. So it is really up to you. Where I might have a small sweet potatoe with my lean meat and have just a little good fat on it, someone on Atkins might have a big steak with lots of butter sauce and a fresh salad with full fat dressing. But they would probably not have the sweet potato, at least not in the early levels. You really should read both books and decide which plan fits your lifestyle best. Wishing you success.

Welcome!!

Please know that while this plan is less restrictive than atkins, it still has its own rules and limits that you can find in the Meal Plan guides and Food lists in the Updated Food lists thread near the top of this forum.

While we are allowed to eat protein until satisified and low carb veggies, we do have portion control ie: fat amounts, dairy, nuts, beans.... built into the plan as these things are not unlimited.

I wish you the very best on your journey down the scale!! :D

I (and many others apparently) have chosen South Beach Diet, because it more closely resembles a proper way of eating for life. You are allowed a good blend of protein, fruits and veggies, fats, and on occasion, whole grain carbs. This is close to the way you would eat a normal meal anyway if you weren't dieting. (barring the fried food and sweets of course).

Atkins seems like a great plan to lose weight, but I've seen many doctors (including my doctor) who are very skeptical. And it certainly doesn't train you how to live beyond atkins - because you can't eat that way unless you are strictly on the diet.

Good luck with SBD.

Hello!!

Yes, do get the book!! It does help to read it!! :agree:

I started SBD when I was 54 yrs old!! Age did not hinder my success as it actually motivated me to not want to be an old sick fat woman. :agree:

As for the beer.....sorry but you are going to have to avoid it for several months as you progress through your journey....you'll be able to drink beer again but on a limited basis. You can do that!!!! :agree: :D

You are going to feel so good and healthy eating this way that you won't want to drink so much beer in time. :agree:

Good Luck!!

Just a word of advice about the beer...

I went out with the girls and had a few one weekend and it was FOREVER before I got it back off!! Not at all worth it. I figure from now on if I need a drink it's going to be the wine the book suggests or the hard stuff!!

Best of luck!!

Hey Sprint,

I know exactly how you feel. I'm a beer fanatic. I particularly like the darker German beers (I think they are higher in calories too). I decided i needed to make a choice, beer, or my belly. I figure I've got a whole life ahead of me to enjoy drinking. I'm no longer in college, so I got my binge drinking over with already.

I chose to go an entire year without drinking at all - no beer - maybe an occasional glass of wine (hasnt' happened yet). After a year of losses - I'll evaluate where I am. When I'm below 180, I can go back to drinking sensibly. But at 280lbs - it was a sacrifice i needed to make.

I polished of the last of the beer last week and emptied the Black Velvet bottle last night. I am about 1/4 of the way throught the book and plan to start this week.
I may do Atkins for a month and then ease in to this program. I do not have enough knowledge of it yet. I have to finish the book.
I like beer but hate the fact I am 5'10" and 245.

However you decide to attack it... but go for it! I think you will find SB easy to follow after you read it. Usually if I have additional questions the food lists at the top of the forum answer them.

Just stay off the cerveza! Seems like I read somewhere it was better to eat a loaf of white bread than to drink the beer. Ha!
