Wow... an article showing a change brewing? Perhaps...

A growing number of doctors and medical centers are shutting the door on freebies from big drug companies.

I've benefited from those freebies a few times when expensive medication wasn't covered by insurance. My medicine bill is $590 a month for antihistamines and steroids, due to an allergy to pesticides, which I can't control.

I keep hearing about the drug companies having a program to assist people who can't afford their meds, have you looked into that?

It's not just the freebies. I was in the waiting room of an endocrinologist with a diabetic friend and in walks a drop-dead gorgeous woman in her mid-twenties, dressed to get instant attention. This was the drug rep. Apparently, the drug companies recruit beauty contest entrants to be their sales reps.

No I need to do that as my insurance expires this month. I have so many issues I doubt I would be able to get insurance.

There was a 60 minutes episode about how cheerleaders are very desirable to work as drug reps. My friend thats a chemist does that (very studly guy) makes more money selling drugs then making them.

At my docs office it's littered with freebies and drug reps are in and out like a revolving door. I never noticed any of them were amazingly attractive, although they were (of course) well dressed and reasonably pleasing looking. Rarely do you find sales people who are slovenly and look like they need meds themselves, hehe. Besides, the drug rep really doesn't need to know much about the drug, they mostly need to know how to manipulate people.

Eek! Can you at least get some catastrophic insurance? Try a search on ehealthinsurance.com. Although, sadly, that probably won't help with your prescription costs.
Reading the article...$20 billion? Aieee!
