The amount of inaccurate or even misleading information that is passed off as fact among many people regarding lower-carb lifestyles still surprises me.

The latest is an article from a well-known medical Web site regarding high-protein diets. A physician expert states that “Much of the weight lost with the Atkins diet is water.”

I’m sure many people who have lost 30, 40, 50 or even 150 pounds would have a good laugh at that statement.

Since the human body is between 50 to 65% water anyway, of course a lot of weight loss in any program is water. We'd be walking around sloshing if water wasn't lost along with the fat to keep the % where it needs to be. But I'll bet since most LCers drink lots of water, we are more hydrated than those on low fat diets.

This always surprises me, if even the "so called" experts dont know about or understand how low carbing works or what we eat, drink etc, how on earth can they posibly say its bad, unhealthy..... I lost 84lbs over 2 years ago and if its water I lost then I was never fat, just in severe water retention!!!!

We do lose the water of hydration that is bound to the glycogen (animal starch) that is depleted from our livers during induction. That can be several pounds' worth. Then again, I think this same stuff is the first to go on just about any diet.

There is little water associated with fat. They are like oil and water. No wait, they ARE oil and water!

Atkins can be a high protein diet.

Yep the 57 pounds and 6 inches on my waist that I lost in the last 12 weeks were all water.

Morons.

When I got my initial whoosh, most of it was probably water. People said "Oh, it's just water weight..." I don't want to carry so many extra pounds of water around, who would?? That's not a reason to quit the diet, it's one to celebrate it!

But obviously, it not all water. But hey, then they would have to admit Atkins actually works ;)
