before my low carb days, i used to looooove salt n' vinegar potato chips. well, i just found myself chewing them - just to have a taste -and then spitting them out - so as not to ingest the carbs, i also did it with a bite of cookie the other day. it seemed to satisfy whatever struggle i was having - but i wonder if just chewing something might trigger my insulin levels to go up. any thoughts? (mind you - this is not a daily thing. i am usually under control.) induction is over and at weigh in this morning i lost 4 more pounds! 16 away from goal.-anna

yup, it will cause insulin surges and if you put a sugar (simple or complex) into your mouth, digestive juices in saliva will break this down into simple sugars, some of which you're going to digest, even though you are spitting food out.
It's amazing, isn't it, the control over us sugar and our own danger carbs (for you, potatoes, it sounds like!--for me, it's gluten grains) have, isn't it? Until I worked at keeping away from these these anti-nutritious foods that I know trigger cravings for me, I really didn't appreciate what alcholism must be like. Now I realize I'm exactly like a drug addict. Chewing and spitting out, digging through trash cans for a bit of a child's discarded Ding-Dong, eating frozen raw bread dough...I've heard all sorts of stories like that on this board! So take heart at knowing at least you're not alone in your struggles
