does anyone take magnesium supplements? I just started taking 250 mg 2 x a day. I'm hoping it will help with constipation. I know everyone says to just up the veggies and water but I already do and it doesn't help. I hope I am not taking too much. The guidelines are so sparatic for magnesium when I looked it up on the internet. Any advice?

Hi niagara123 (I'm in the Falls too but on the other side of the river..) I take magnesium too but mixed with calcium (also has potassium, Zinc, and manganese in dinky little amounts). I also take just plain magnesium - 100 mg tablets - I'll take three twice a day and am never constipated. I do get "loose" at times but that's better in my mind than the alternative...You'll have to experiment - keep a log of what amount you take, and the "results" then stick with that. Good luck.

I was a little nervous because I read that too much mag in your system can cause kidney failure. I just don't know how much is too much. I actually bought the 500mg but I broke them in half and I am taking 1/2 in the morn and 1/2 at night. I hope that this will be ok. I always get nervous about stuff like this.

this is saying 400 mg per day ... but I have been taking 600 mg for years now and there's nothing wrong with me ;-)

does anyone take magnesium supplements? I just started taking 250 mg 2 x a day.I am taking 800 mg a day. I'm hoping it will help with constipation. I know everyone says to just up the veggies and water but I already do and it doesn't help.Are you REALLY constipated, i.e. having infrequent bowel movements, OR is it just that your stools are quite firm. On low carb, you should not have copious loose stools, but rather small firm stools since you are eating nutrient rich foods that are more fully adsorbed than the carb laden grains/veggies with all their fiber you cannot digest. Besides water and magnesium, you need to eat enough fat/oil, at least 50% of calories and preferably more, so that you have sufficient lubrication so that the firmer stools pass easily, as mine do. I hope I am not taking too much. The guidelines are so sparatic for magnesium when I looked it up on the internet. Any advice? At the end of the paragraph at the top of page 206 in Dr. Eades book PPLP, it says Nowadays we’re taking in five to fifteen times more calcium than magnesium much to the detriment of our health.Earlier in the paragraph he states that we should have a ratio of about 1:1 and that the amount our ancestors consumed was in the range of 800 to 1500 mg. per day. So I would suggest to fallsgal that she skip the multi mineral pill and just take the magnesium. Then if she needs the other minerals add them individually.
You might be interested in reading what Dr. Eades says about fiber, which is what makes the human stool so loose, like a cow, rather than firm like a dog (when not feed human veggies but meat like they would eat in the wild).
So, we have a situation where a product (fiber) causes damage to the cells
lining a tube, causing them to produce a lot of mucus in an attempt to
protect themselves. In the process many of these cells die and are replaced
by new cells. (Increasing the chance of mutations that could become cancerous.)
And this is perceived as a good thing.
My question is: is it really a good thing?Read his whole blog here;

I take magnesium for headaches. At three pills a day I get the Milk of Magnesia effect - something I don't need since I eat a huge amount of veggies and the fiber in them is enough for me. How much veggies are you eating a day? I eat easily a pound and a half.

Milk of Magnesia is for consitpation! How about that!
If you are constipated why not take some? :)

I think the dose of magnesium they use for constipation is something like 1000-1500 mg. It might even be more!

Three 250mg pills will give me the effect. I had to split my dose up to lessen it.
