Low-fat Vegan Diet Rivals Oral Diabetes Medications In
Federally Funded Study Main Category: Diabetes News Article
Date: 10 Aug 2006 - 7:00am (PDT)
A low-fat vegan diet treats type 2 diabetes more effectively
than a standard diabetes diet and may be more effective than
single-agent therapy with oral diabetes drugs, according to a
study in the August issue of Diabetes Care, a journal
published by the American Diabetes Association. Study
participants on the low-fat vegan diet showed dramatic
improvement in four disease markers: blood sugar control,
cholesterol reduction, weight control, and kidney function.
The randomized controlled trial was conducted by doctors and
dieticians with the Physicians Committee for Responsible
Medicine (PCRM), the George Washington University, and the
University of Toronto with funding from the National
Institutes of Health and the Diabetes Action Research and
Education Foundation.
The vegan diet represents a major departure from current
diabetes diets, in that it placed no limits on calories,
carbohydrates, or portions. "The diet appears remarkably
effective, and all the side effects are good ones--especially
weight loss and lower cholesterol," says lead researcher Neal
D. Barnard, M.D., PCRM president and adjunct associate
professor of medicine at the George Washington University. "I
hope this study will rekindle interest in using diet changes
first, rather than prescription drugs."
Diabetes rates have climbed rapidly in recent years, and
more than 20 million Americans now have the disease,
which is linked to kidney failure, blindness, and
cardiovascular disease.
###
Vance is a study participant and former police officer who
lives in the District of Columbia. In response to the
intervention diet, Vance's high blood sugar plunged rapidly
into the normal range, and he dropped about 60 pounds. Nancy
also has a compelling story to tell. Until she tried the
intervention diet, Nancy's diabetes was worsening and not
responding to intensified drug therapy. During the course of
the study she lost about 42 pounds and was able to discontinue
one of her medications.
Founded in 1985, the Physicians Committee for Responsible
Medicine is a nonprofit health organization that promotes
preventive medicine, especially good nutrition. PCRM also
conducts clinical research studies, opposes unethical human
experimentation, and promotes alternatives to animal research.

Why dontcha just eat real foods, like real meat, real fresh
produce, and real dairy, and save yourself the trouble of
being sick and nutrient-deficient on a vegan diet or sick and
full of side-effects from the drugs.
Only a real food diet can actually and truly improve your
health if you are diabetic.

Barnard is the head of PCRM and is the common-law spouse of
Ingrid Newkirk, the head of PETA. He is a vegan non-practicing
psychiatrist masquerading as a researcher. And we are to
accept that his "studies" are supposed to be valid science.
TC
I've not read the entire report, but I've read enough to see
that they are only comparing two slightly different high-carb
diets. One seems to be marginally better than the other. I'd
like to see them tested in comparison to a low-carb diet,
which I think is probably much better for diabetics.

The only argument needed to completely dismantle any
credibility anyone may feel this study has is to understand
that the authors are vegan anti-animal-sourced-foods
pro-animal-rights nutbars. The fact that Barnard and Newkirk
are shacked up together is immaterial but slightly interesting
and very informative as to their usefulness as pretend
scientists.

Oh well, I guess I'm wrong. You've given us uncontrovertible
proof that he is more than qualified to be a researcher in
nutrition. Oh hang on there, all you've done is shown that he
has been able to wrangle some gullible press coverage in a
couple of areas in the popular media, I guess that isn't
really scientific credibility after all.

The man is a vegan anti-animal-sourced-food pro-animal-rights
nutbar. He is shacked up with Ingrid Newkirk, the head of
PETA. His organisation, PCRM, has few, if any actual
physicians as members, and is nearly entirely funded by PETA
and other nutbar organisations. He is not even able to
practise in his own field of training. He has no training in
the field of nutrition. None.
And considering that you are a nutbar yourself, and you are
trying so hard (and failing miserably) to try to pretend that
he has a bit of credibility as nutrition researcher, it simply
does not help his case.
The man is an out and out fraudulent researcher. There is
no better example of just how pathetic the American system
of peer review science has become than the example of how
this complete fake and nutbar with a degree in psychiatry
(of all things) and a strange and twisted hankering for
veganism can throw together some completely silly,
fraudulent and 100% biased nonsensical crap and somehow
pass it off as real science.
That may convince idiots like Oprah and her fans, but it does
not even begin to pass muster with anyone with even a wee bit
insight into this issue.
And BTW, Jesus has nothing to do with nutrition, and every
time you bring that up, people just roll their eyes and shake
their heads and come to the conclusion that you are a few
bricks short of a full load.
