Just got sme Calcium, Magnesium and zinc suppliments from wamart. It has maltodextrin and cellulose in it among other stuff. Not too worried about the other stuff but am a bit concerned especially with the maltodextrin. Is this okay? I read somwhere it comes from cornstarch.
Thanks, L

It's probably okay, because it's such a small amount, but it would be better next time to find something without fillers. My multi-vitamin packet that I take each day has 5 calories so it surely has 1 carb. I don't even count it.

I'm NOT on Atkins BUT I have been taking supplements for many years....

Yes maltodextrin is cornstarch and used as filler. Cellulose is a sugar also used as filler. Newbirth is correct - it is a small amount but depending on dosage and if you take it on a contend basis - it adds up especially if you take several different supplements all containing fillers. *As I am diabetic I stay away from maltodextrin & cellulose supplements.

I take a 'HUGE" amount of daily supplements - some at higher then prescribed doses so I only purchase supplements free of other chemicals such as fillers.

You have to read every label and check it often. I used a Multivitamin for a long while and when I repurchased it I realized the capsule size changed so I took a look at the ingredients and sure enough the formula changed also. They added Maltodextrin, Cellulose and Mannitol and that was from a very reputable company I have been buying form for years for pureness.

You can find supplements that are in a more pure form WITHOUT fillers.

Good Luck! Nikki

The starches used in multivitamins are used to hold the tablet together. They are the paste that keeps it from falling apart.

Do you mind my asking where you get your supplements? Thanks for you reply,

WalMart will have cheap brands and the cheaper, the more filler. I go online for almost everything.

Life Extension Foundation has a great sale at the end of the year, if you can afford to stock up. www.lef.org.

provitaminas has a free shipping deal if your order is over US$30. www.provitaminas.com.

I've used a few others, but tend to do the bulk of my buying at these two.

GNC or The Vitamin Shoppe can be pretty good if you want to buy in person. Read the label.

No problem Lori,

I take a variety of vitamins, herbals, holistic & homeopathic supplements and I'm always 'tweaking' them depending on my needs. I order ALL my supplements online from various places including from an herbal place that will encapsule your own 'personal' mixtures (you can mix up to 3 different formula's into one and cut down the amount of pills you would have to take individually). 'Quality' means everything to me so some are high priced and some are cheap. I have a hard time digesting hard solid tablet type supplements so I search for my supplements in capsule or softgel types.

Over the years I have become 'very particular' about all the ingredients in my supplements. Others may not be as detailed but I look for a supplement that is the purest and the only other ingredient found in it is what the capsule is made of. And I know it all has benefited my health and well being today.

If you're new to online buying some general sites are .....
VitaCost(variety on different brand names)
Puritan Pride (good quality-cheaply priced-always a sale)
Life Extension (great in depth site-cheaper priced for members but you can buy without membership at a higher price).
NutraSanus (great knowledgable information)

*If the online site does NOT show a full Supplement Fact list - don't buy from them and RE-check the formula each time you order.

The best advice I can give is read, read, read every label and research what those ingredients are. Some maybe things that don't matter to you but some maybe things you don't want in your body. The choice is yours!
