I am new to the low carb thing, well, I tried Atkins about 8 years ago. Anyways, could someone just give me a brief overview fo SB and how it differs from Atkins? I am curious and if it looks like something I could try I will purchase the book. Thanks so much in advance!

TBH I dont know much about South Beach although I've been lead to believe its kinda low fat Atkins with fruit. A more politically correct/government friendly/socially acceptable version of Atkins - But it isnt Atkins.

Judy NYC would be the best one to explain the SB diet as she has been successful on it and lost a lot of weight and is now in maintenance.

Briefly however, it is based on "good carbs vs. bad carbs." It also differs from other low carb diets in that you don't have to go into ketosis and it is lowfat.
As with most diets, the SB diet has its own particular foodlist which differs somewhat from other diets.

But if you are really serious about trying it, I would advise you to check out the South Beach Diet from your library and read it. Then, if you decide it is for you, buy the book.

Good carbs.....Good Fats....low Glycemic Index foods....No processed foods.

These are some of the main aspects of this food plan. There are food lists here along with Meal plan guides that you can easily look through or even print up and review them to see if this is something that you can live with. Please look for the thread up top called "Updated Food Lists".

While we do eat lean proteins, we are encouraged to use oilve oil, olives, avocaods....as these are good fats. We are also encouraged to eat salmon as it too, has good fats.

South Beach is a very liberal controlled carb food plan. Our inital phase I aka Induction, is simialr to Atkins in that there is NO Fruit, NO starch, NO grain at all!! But we are allowed things like nuts and legumes in phase I. We are allowed 2 cups daily of dairy in phase I and its low fat or fat free.

To me, the best part of this plan has been the ease that I found in making this a way to eat for life. Its not a diet to me but the way I eat now. I will never eat the way I used to eat again..that is how I know that I will not gain this weight back....this time!!! ;)

Hope this helps!! Good Luck!!
