So my hubby and I are starting SB tomorrow. He is in end stage renal failure, so we are going to modify his diet slightly to fit with his needs. He is not supposed to have too much phosphorus or calcium. I am trying to get ideas for good, easy to eat non refrigerated snacks that he could take to dialysis. Nuts would be my first thought, but they are full of phosphorus and he is not a huge nut fan. Right now he takes the 100 calorie baked doritos or ritz mix and eats that. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Hello and welcome!!

I'm very sorry about your husbands condition. What is his prognosis? Will he get a transplant?

I don't know the phosphorus or calcium content of the snacks but I can tell you that the snacks he is eating are a :nono: on SB. Is he going to start with phase I?

Here are some of the snacks that I eat:
Hummus and celery
hummus on a wasa crispbread
natural peanut butter on celery or wasa
orange
grapes
1 HB egg
canteloupe w/ cottage cheese

I do not recommend to anyone to eat the Kraft line of SBD foods but for your husband, they're snacks will be better than the doritos and ritz that he's eating now.

Hope thie helps!! Good Luck!! :)

Sorry to hear about your husband's problems. :(

I wish him and you all the best.

As far as snacks--what Judy said. :)

ps: Dorritos and Ritz have a lot of salt. Doesn't salt stress out the kidneys?

I'm sorry to hear about your husband, I hope he can get a transplant soon.
For snacks, I don't know the pho. or cal. levels but, here's a few I have to check out..
hb egg
lowfat cheese
almonds
celery with laughing cow lite
natural pb, I've seen snack size pb maybe he could take that w/celery?
carrots/broc/peppers, lowfat dip/dressing
raspberries/blueberries

Just saw Judy's post, the sb line tends to have a lot of sodium so I avoid it but, for your hubby it will be a better alternative than the ritz/doritos. You can also find whole wheat wheat thins and triscuits that would be a bit better than that and put them in individual bags yourself. Good luck starting the beach!

I have a condition called Parathyroidism which causes my calcium levals to go very high. I am going to a surgeon on Monday to prepare for surgery and I will ask him for food suggestions that are low in calcium. Then we can check them against SB and maybe we can find something he will like.
Good luck to you both, Michele

thanks for all the well wishes.. I dont have much time right now but I will go into detail about his condition later. I know the snacks he is eating are not good, but we just started today. Also the snacks he eats there will need to be NON-REFRIDGERATED so that he can just carry them in his bag. Thank you all again!!

I don't have a refrigerator usually at work. But I still take hardboiled eggs (should be fine for a few hours in an air conditioned building), carrots, fruit, etc. Pistachios or almonds are some of my favourite snacks. Pistachios (unsalted especially) are good because sometimes opening them gets my mind off of other stuff, and the time it takes slows down my eating. I think the celery with peanut butter single packs is a good idea too.
