Just throw them off Daryl. Obviously some very unpleasant
internet troll. Not the kind of thing I enjoy getting dropped
into my inbox on Palanth...

Ross & Daryl,

I also received a Palanth personal message from our newest
Palanth member "Harrison Ford". I noticed my message was CC'd
to Jacques Cinq-Mars and three other members, none of which
were you Ross or Daryl. Apparently this jerk is using Palanth
to distribute his non-family oriented URLs. I would already
have terminated Mr. Ford's membership, but apparently I can
only moderate Forum posts, in any case if I have the ability I
haven't figured out how to terminate memberships. I have sent
Jacques a regular e-mail telling of this problem which Daryl
and Ross describe, with my opinion that Mr. Ford has probably
been busy sending this crap to other members through the
Palanth forum's personal message box.

I am sorry for this situation, but I'm sure Jacques will
terminate "Harrison Ford" in short order. One
question....These messages did not arrive a regular e-mail did
they? I'm only asking because, so far as I can tell, the
problem messages are confined to the inter-forum Palanth
personal messages. If you've received these in your regular
email, let me know.

Doing my best to resolve the situation, Daryl Habel Palanth
forum moderator

I had one of these too, but it was dumped in the spam bin
by Yahoo's filter service. I don't get any group's emails
sent directly to me, so it must have come through my
personal email.

When I went over to Palanth to find out how to contact Jacques
Cinq-Mars, I saw that Harrison Ford was registered as a new
member, but I couldn't find any easy way to let the group know
what was happening.

Yahoo's filter service is very good, but sometimes I check the
spam bin to see if there are any 'real' emails before erasing
the lot. This time I found two interesting personal emails
about Homo erectus amongst the Viagra junk.

It's very easy for a spammer to trawl through group messages
to get individual email addresses, and then wham! you get hit
with a hundred spams a day.

Yahoo also has a service that lets you set up a temporary
internet name, to receive, say, all messages from one group.
When it gets infected with spam, you just dump it, and start
a new one.

regards

Richard

Thanks, Richard. Apparently, if people are getting spam
e-mails from Palanth, the problem is a little more serious
than I first thought. No luck so far contacting Jacques. He
might be travelling for all I know. But I'll keep on it.

Other-Brother: Yep, regular email, or as regular as the
subject line would suggest (reproduced again, below). I had
no particular reason to think that it was anything special,
in terms of exclusivity of pathway to my Inbox. But
waydaminot: did you mean "inter-forum"
(i.e., between different fora), or "intra-forum"
(i.f., within a single forum)? If the former, I was unaware
that such a communication network existed. If the latter,
I have never used it, nor have I received messages
through it.

Yahoo didn't do that for me; it went straight to my Inbox
instead of to my Bulk folder, where I have directed Yahoo
to send spam to wither and die. I also do not remember
ever having directed any Palanth-originated messages to my
email address.

I don't receive e-mails from Palanth but when I logged in to
the forum it showed that there was a personal message for me.
I believe the scum has signed on as a member & then found a
way to send the message to everyone on the Palanth forum list,
rather than posting it on the forum board.

I think Jacques will need to further restrict either the
ease in which new members can sign up, or the level of
access that ordinary members can get when they're signed in
(such as not being able to see the full membership list, &
not being able to send personal messages through the forum).
Or probably both...

Other-brother, sir,

Thanks for the details. My mistake. I meant intra-forum
personal messages. Members of Palanth, when logged in to the
website, have an icon at the very bottom line of the forum
home page, where personal messages can be exchanged. This
(intra-forum personal message) is where I received my message
from Mr. Ford. If I also received a message from Mr. Ford in
my regular e-mail, it must have been diverted by the Yahoo
spam filter (to bulk) which I seldom check before emptying.

Jacques, in the past, has been known to make mass emailing
messages to Palanth members, but only short messages informing
of latest thread subject lines. I don't think he has sent one
of these mass-emailings in the past year. So far as I know, I,
as a member nor even as moderator, nor any member, can send a
mass e-mailing to all members from the Palanth set-up. It can
only be done by Jacques or the Forum administrator (his son).

For whatever reason, and by whatever means, Mr. Ford has used
Palanth for his spam messages, but I can do nothing except
make Jacques informed of the extent Mr. Ford has made use of
us, which you folks have made known to me here. There has been
no discussion of this on Palanth, nor will I give Mr. Ford the
satisfaction of starting a discussion. I'm still trying to
reach Jacques, but so far I've received no answer.

Ultimately, Jacques will have to deal with Mr. Ford and the
problem, perhaps taking measures Ross has suggested. I can
only moderate messages that appear on the forum webpage.

Thanks again to everyone for providing details, which I'll
pass along to Jacques whenever I reach him.

Dar: To the best of my recollection, I have never received
any email regarding Jacques Cinq-Mars' Palanth Forum before
the one from "Harrison Ford" advertising pornography.

There is still the possibility that the "Harrison Ford"
porno-spam was not sent through anything involving the
Palanth Forum. The "Harrison Ford" porno-spam might have
been designed to look like such a Palanth message, but it
may have been sent from outside of the confines of that
Forum. If the email addresses of the FDorum members were to
be put onto a list, then each member might be sent a
separate sopy of an email whose form had been copied from a
Palanth Forum Personal Message to a single recipient,
perhaps to the spammer alone. All that is really required is
membership in the Forum, and access to its address file.

What you might do is ask Jacques what sort of firewall is in
place between the personal information that Forum members
supplied when registering to Forum and spyare used by
pornographers to investigate the spamming potentials of a
personal computer used to access pornographic websites.

> Ultimately, Jacques will have to deal with Mr. Ford and the

Perhaps Cinq-Mars Pere would wish to set some controls on
which sites are visited by the Forum adminstrator when Papa
is away, and perhaps invest in a secure firewall system to
safeguard our personal information from nasty
sexually-explict-content-transmitted diseases.

Well, I'm not going to visit that Palanth Forum website
again, unless I use somebody else's computer. In whatever
way, the Forum's health and security has been compromised by
the activities of a sexually deviant person, and I have no
wish to expose my system to the Forum's apparent corruption.

Well, you have to do what seems best to you. Although there's
no doubt that someone has used Palanth membership to
accumulate a list of member email addresses, and this ability
to collect addresses must be changed (probably to hide email
addresses on the membership webpage), I have yet to see any
sign that merely visiting, reading or posting messages on the
Palanth forum homepage poses a threat to the reader's computer
system. It is not yet known if the send-out occurred within
the Forum administrator's capability to send mass e-mails from
the membership list itself, or whether someone has merely
copied all the email addresses and fashioned a mass-mailing by
some other means. Jacques has been informed of the problem and
he has passed the problem along to the webmaster (presently on
vacation). All input and suggestions deriving from this thread
also has been passed along to Jacques and the webmaster.
People are looking into the problem, and for the present, its
out of my hands.

This sort of thing seems to be happening elsewhere, viz:

http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/

ANNOUNCEMENT: Once again, malicious hackers are using this
domain to send out abusive and offensive spam to try to cause
trouble. As a reminder, WRH does not keep or use mailing
lists, does not publish any email newsletters, and does not
send out bulk emails of any kind. Any such emails arriving
claiming to be from WRH are bogus, and should be treated as
likely threats.
