Are there any limits to how much potassium you should supplement? I already take 400mg of potassium.

I usually hike or jog an hour everyday, lately its over 100 degrees and I'm sweating hard. And I do an hour of pilates or yoga daily. This morning I woke up with a heartrate of 176 and I was super-light headed. I drank 9 big glasses of water with 1/8 tsp light salt (potassium/sodium) in each glass and then I felt great again.

I eat half cup of almonds everyday, along with salmon every few days but I always seem to running low.

Hey nawchem,

I too have to watch my potassium levels. I do hot yoga and sweat like crazy and that tends to deplete my levels.

I think you have to take magnesium with the potassium for correct absorption but I couldnt tell you how much that is needed. I think I read that when I did a google search for potassium benefits.

This really isnt very helpful. Just comiserating because I have the same problem.

I have a script from last year I take extended release potassium chloride 1500 mg - my doc wrote it for twice a day but I take it once a day.

The food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences has estimated the minimum requirements for potassium for men and women over 18 years of age to be 2,000 milligrams per day.

Nancy, welcome to your first summer in CO!

With the 25% humidity we've been running, you're losing a lot more fluid than you think. It evaporates faster than you can tell.

Someone on this forum, Lisa maybe? has a recipe for LC sports drink. See if you can't find that and make yourself a batch.

Also, do you like avacado? I seem to remember it has crazy amounts of potassium in it.

thanks lcgirl so much for the information. I'm going to ask the dr for a prescription, at least now I know I don't have to worry about overdoing it.

Thanks Batspit, I'll add some avocado and look for the sports drink recipe. I almost got gatorade today  -- they would make a fortune if they made a LC one.

The class lasts for 90 minutes and it is hard (one of the hardest things I have ever done) but sooo worth it. You must love yoga too since you do it everyday.

Sorry for highjacking the thread.

I use a homemade LC electrolyle solution during my bike rides. I've taken a bike ride for two hours during the 95+ weather for three of the last four days and have had no problems.

I mix Koolaid with a Splenda/stevia mixture and add Lite Salt and some baking soda.

Dodger if I use a 1liter bottle how much salt and baking soda do I use? I guess the soda is for the carbonate? Koolaids a good idea. Now I know what I can do when I'm sick too, I always drink pedialyte and gatorade.

I drank a liter of water before bed last night with 1/4 tsp of lite salt and I feel great today so dehydration/electrolytes must have been the problem.

Don't go too crazy on potassium, too much can be deadly too. But you're probably fine as long as you don't go too hog wild.

I drink a large glass of water just before bed, and another first thing in the morning. That helps treat "leftover" dehydration and I don't wake up quite so debilitated. (Do wake up and have to pee RIGHT away, most days... and if I don't, that's a big flag that I need more water!)

I don't worry about overdose, as long as I'm taking it sensibly, with water. I take three of the pills several times a day, and use the lite salt on everything (doesn't everyone salt their salad?). I think if you take too much by mouth, it'll come back up.

I'd use about 3/4 of a teaspoon of Lite Salt and a couple of teaspoons of bicarbonate for a liter of liquid.

Thanks Dodger! And thanks everyone else, I think I've got this problem solved.
