I read the following on a women's health web site that is trying to sell me books and magazines:

***************************
High protein diets, according to a recent study, double a woman’s loss of calcium. To deal with excess acidity triggered by protein, your body has to “borrow” alkaline minerals from your bone-bank. That makes high protein diets a bad deal for women.

Woman-Wise Cure: A half-teaspoon of sodium and potassium bicarbonate in a glass of water, one hour before eating, alkalinizes your body so you can deal with a high protein meal without robbing your bone-bank.

***************************

Has anyone heard of this? And how would I go about getting the precise mixture of sodium/potassium bicarb without giving this woman $40?

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Karla

The idea that high protein diets cause bone loss is conjecture presented as fact. Anti-LC types like to point out that protein dietys are acidifying and that acid leeches calcium out of bones. They leave out the information that no studies have actually confirmed this or that grains are just as acidifying as meat.

There is an excellent article by Mary Enig and Sally Fallon that debunks this myth once and for all: "Dem Bones:
Do High Protein Diets Cause Bone Loss?" I'm sorry that I've lost the link to this article, but you pought to be able to find it on Google.

And even if it was true dietary alkaline would be spent in the stomach.

with all the cheese we eat, yogurt and as in my case Kefir, I think we get lots of Calcium and many of us take vit. D to make it absorb...

KDavis,

How was "high protein diet" defined in the article you are referencing?

You'd be amazed how often this crops up. In short, a low carb, adequate protein, high fat diet does NOT cause any loss of calcium.

Here is the article mentioned by Ceberezin: Dem bones: Do High Protein Diets Cause Bone Loss? (http://www.westonaprice.org/mythstruths/mtbones.html)
