Moisturizer: Lecithin Lecithin is a fatlike substance called a
phospholipid and is important in skin care as its presence in
the body ensures that every cell is hydrated. It is a key
building block of cell membranes as without it, they would
harden. It is composed mostly of B vitamins, phosphoric acid,
choline, linoleic acid, and inositol. Lecithin protects cells
from oxidation and largely comprises the protective sheaths
surrounding the brain. It is commercially available as a food
supplement and for medical uses. It is usually isolated from
egg yolk or soy beans. As a food supplement lecithin is well
tolerated as lecithin can be totally metabolized. It is
approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for
human consumption.
Besides being a fatty substance, lecithin is also a fat
emulsifier or lubricator and is used commercially in
industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to protective
coverings. It is used as a non-toxic surfactant (wetting agent
that allows easy spreading) stabilizer, and water-binding
agent in cosmetics and topical anti-inflammatory creams.
The base of lecithin includes different molecular groups.
There is the compound of phosphor and fat molecular groups,
and also two pro-vitamins from the group B, inositol and
choline. Fat acids inside the fat molecular group belong to
those compounds that are most often called vitamin F.
The presence of phosphor in lecithin is important as phosphor
is an important component of every cell in humans and this
element essentially affects and controls the right development
of cells. The shortage of phosphor results in stunting in
growth, deformations, and the dying of cells. One of the
factors that have been proved to cause ageing and deformation
of the skin is the shortage of phosphor. Vitamin F, which is
present in lecithin, affects the fat in the skin by changing
their structure. It affects skin regenerative factors,
protects the skin from negative external influences, and makes
it more beautiful and young-looking.
The molecular group of choline, present in phospho-lipid of
lecithin is said to stimulate the work of nervous threads and
by doing that it informs the whole system about the condition
in the skin. Choline is a molecule that tides and cleans
inside the cells. It means choline helps in removing poison,
excessive medicines, and dangerous products of metabolism
from skin cells. It also has an anti-stress effect on the
skin cells. The molecular group of inositol, which is inside
the molecule of phospho-lipid lecithin, has a similar effect
like choline. This pro-vitamin from the group B is also food
for the nervous threads of the skin and has an anti-stress
effect. It is also considered to be an important
anti-irritant, anti-allergen, and to have a direct protective
effect on the skin.
