Ok, so I have a problem with breakfast....I never eat it. Mainly due to the fact that I am SOOO not a morning person. Godzilla all the way. Anyway, I always see posts about the Atkins shakes and figured I would give it a whirl.

Bought a large pack of the Vanilla flavor at the local Sam's Club. They said to shake really well and serve very cold. Yep, done and done. Well, I have to say that I can't figure out how y'all are drinking these things!! I was a few sips in and I couldn't do it anymore. I thought it tasted a bit like sand with evaporated milk. I don't know, maybe with something else thrown in there as well.

Anyway, my question is this. For those of you who drink them, do you really like the flavor or is it one of those things you "suffer" through? Am I the only one that thought these things were absolutely horrible?

I drink the shakes also, very very cold - I like the chocolate best, vanilla 2nd. I also eat morning start bars.

I had bought the vanilla one. Are they all that kind of gritty composition?

I tried the Atkins shake, didn't like it at all. Has a gritty texture. Doesn't seem to matter to me how cold it is.

This being said, I have also tried the Slim Fast Low Carb shakes, and they're a lot better. I don't *love* them, but they're pretty good, and have come in handy when travelling etc. You can get them at Wal-Mart for around $5 for a 4pak. My husband likes the vanilla and I like both the vanilla and the chocolate flavour. If you were going to try just one, I'd try the vanilla first. Keep in fridge, and serve over ice if you can, with a straw.

I used to enjoy the Atkins shake mixes, but apparently they don't make those anymore (???). The ready-to-drink stuff just tastes metallic to me, and I cannot stand drinking it on its own. I used to throw them in the blender with a handful of berries or DaVinci syrup or PB or whatever - with ice of course! - but now I use whey protein powder for that. I have tried a number of LC ready-to-drink shakes and have not cared for ANY of them.

However, I have discovered I can have scrambled eggs with ham and cheese ready in under ten minutes!

When I first tasted them- YUK!! I suffered through the card board, chalky taste.
By the 3rd day.WHEW! I was guzzling them down w/o a thought.

but I HAVE to drink w/ a straw and icey cold.AND only the Canned ones not the mixes.
Chocolate delight and vanilla are the only 2 I've ever tried.

I've never tried them! Since I work from home 3 days a week, it's easy for me to make a yummy breakfast instead. I am on month 3 of the plan and still haven't gotten sick of omelette yet!

I have to agree with johnnyvue. I love them too, both chocolate flavors and the vanilla. I tried the strawberry, YUK and the vanilla caramel, not very good but better than the strawberry. They have changed the formula recently and I like the new better, but they only have 15g of protein instead of the original 20g. Also, they use to hurt my tummy a little but they dont anymore.

I really enjoy the chocolate ones too...

Not sure what else to do with the vanilla except for add some extracts for different flavors, but if there's a texture problem I'm not sure what you can do??? Maybe throw it and some ice in the blender so maybe your mind will think that gritty part is just ice too?? :D

I perfer the strawberry, but very cold. I usually put mine in the freezer for 10-15 mins, so that is has ice in it. Very yummy!!! Another tip, drink them kinda fast, b/c if they get warm, not so good.

I like the slim fast low carb shake, sweetened with splenda better.

Well, I have to agree with the majority, the chocolate ones are the best and make sure they are really COLD! In the freezer for a few minutes is the best!

I make my own
and actually live
on em. The Whey
protein is filling,
keeps me from cheating
and allows me to have
a nice low carb meal like
a giant steak, or do
mexican or chinese out
once in a while and not
feel guilty if I go nuts
on chips, salsa, cheese,
beans and rice.

I swear by the stuff.
Check out: http://www.wheyoflife.org
for details on the many
health benefits of whey
protein, and see:
http://www.supplementdirect.com/?content=52&product_id=10805
for details on the cheapest
price for whey on the Internet
that I have found. And yes, I
buy it in 44 lb bags.

I tasted the coffee in the can mix and after two sips, tossed it out. It was fowl and mettalic. I do like the slim fast carb control ones in the can, as well as the EAS shakes.

About the only thing I found good with atkins shakes was the chocolate powdered shake had some kind of different thickners in it. I could mix some with yogurt and come out with a thick poudding, where all other powders were runny, gritty and nasty with yogurt.

brought the strawberry, agree that the first one was pretty hard to take, second one I did the same as a lot of folks have said, I placed it in the freezer, it actually became slushy and I drank it with a straw and pretty fast! I actually planned not to purchase anymore but I now might give the choc a try

Agreed! ;)

I have had a lot of fun adding mint, banana, or cherry to the chocolate shake for a really tasty flavor.

I have not found a good one for the vanilla...it is just bad all around!!

I to love the chocolate royal, and strawberry, I eat the chocolate peanut bars every morning. But the shakes are getting hard to find, our Walmart is weeding them out. ERR, all the lowcarb stuff I once used is leaving. Back to the outerside of the store.

I took one sip of a chocolate one once, and gagged for hours.

The Chocolate, which I just tried again, is not good to me. I can take the strawberry all day long!!
Also, the Advantage bars are starting to taste really nasty to me. First time around, they were pretty good. Now they seem to have this.....tast that I cant even put a name to. I dont know who has changed, me or them!!!! I cant even eat the ones that I have. I also think that the older they get (sitting around in the cabnit) the more foul they get!! LOL

I really like the Atkins ready to drink vanilla shakes, as well as the vanilla caramel cream ones. The chocolate royal is not bad.

Of course, I don't think of them as a low carb alternative to an ice cream milkshake or something like that. I just know that they are packed with vitamins and minerals, and they take me from hungry to satisfied in less than a minute. I think the taste is decent, although I don't "savor" it.

Sometimes I add SF syrup to the vanilla for variety - adding maple flavor works well.

I've tried most of them and like them. Well, all except the chocolate. For some reason, I find the chocolate gross. I can't drink it, and I can drink/eat almost anything!

I agree with this! A little bit of slushyness makes em pretty good. The strawberry is my favorite...tastes like strawberry quick. I like the chocolate too...also very very cold....and drink em fast. I have one for breakfast pretty regularly. I still have 3 cans of vanilla in my fridge, couldn't bring myself to try another one after the first....blech. I love most things vanilla....but not that.

I like the Slim Fast Carb Control too, as well as the Eas low carb. My sister tried the Eas and couldnt drink it. She said it tasted like chalk.

I dont compare them to ice cream shakes either so I dont have a high expectation with them. Could they be better? and have a yummier richer flavor?? Heck yeah. But I like them enough that they are a treat. I too always put them in the freezer for a while.

Last night I had an Atkins vanilla and tried to see if I could taste or detect the grittyness that others have talked about and I couldnt. It tasted real creamy to me.

I have tried the Slim Fast LC shakes, they are better in some ways. The Chocolate is A LOT better than Atkins. I heard they are not going to make them anymore. Has anyone else heard that?

I also do the freezer thing for about 2 hours prior to drinking them. I prefer the Strawberry or Royale Chocolate.

It's funny how you either love them or hate them. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

I just finished a 4 pack of the chocolate EAS low carb shakes and I must say that I prefered Atkins over EAS, however, the EAS ones were good enough that I will buy them again. (They are cheaper than the Atkins ones !)

I have to say I hated the chocolate. It was the sickest thing I have ever tasted. I tried blending it with ice and it made no different. All of it went in the garbage. Since I hated those, I'm too afraid to try any other Atkins products.

I haven't found a decent shake. I've tried too many too. You can make it taste o.k. if you doctor it up, put it in the blender, etc. Even then it's hit or miss for me. And who wants to make a shake in the morning anyway? ( I don't like to get up any earlier than ABSOLUTELY necessary) But I can handle a bar- as long as it's a crispy kind. I think it's better than no breakfast!
