A new poll conducted by a Washington, D.C.-based food manufacturer-funded education group called the International Food Information Council Foundation (IFIC) finds that people's perception about how many calories, carbs and fats they should be eating in a day is skewed.
.......
About half of the survey participants have deliberately cut back on the amounts and kinds of carbohydrates they eat, including bread, cereal and pasta in an effort to eat healthier.

And on a totally unrelated note, the climb in obesity rates has leveled off. A happy coincidence, no doubt.

Before my wife sprang this nutty idea on my in 2003, I didn't even know what a carb was. I was nutritionally as ignorant as they come. This was right as low carb was starting to catch fire across the country. Everyone knew someone who'd had fabulous success on it.
The reason I bring this up is that the "fad" (and it was a fad in 2002-2004) low carb brought awareness to people like me who thought, when we thought about what kind of food it was, that it was the fat that was making us fat. The low fat dogma, still strong today, was much stronger in 2002. While the low carb fad subsided, it left a permanent mark on society. People understood, even if they didn't embrace it, that it might be the bun, not the patty, that was the problem. They couldn't watch their carbs, even casually, because all they'd been told was that the pot roast was going to give them heart attacks, but the bread and potatoes were just fine, being low fat.
I'm not surprised at all that it's that high. Not everyone is low carbing as we understand it being hardcores, but many are aware that the carbs are an issue, and they are watching them like they did fat in years past. This is a good start. There have to be many tens of millions like me in 2002, nutritionally ignorant and confused by the industry-influenced, conflicting messages from the government. The fad may have helped many of them begin to understand things a bit better.

People seem to be especially aware of sugar now. I went to a birthday party yesterday where not much cake was eaten and they couldn't give away the leftovers.
