Four of the worst enemies of the petite IMHO:

capris
long sleeve shirts
suit jackets
sweaters

I opt for 3/4 length shirts for the arm length BUT what about the torso length of shirts.

Argh! it's such a battle out there.

There are good lines of clothing for the petite, but it's a battle I tell ya!
Either petit clothing is:

a. Expensive (Laundry, Ralph Lauren, Versace, etc...)
b. Ugly! (cutesy frills and the official colour: powder pink)

Not that frills or powder pink isn't nice, not everyone suits it or wants it!
Is it wrong for petits to feel...oh do I dare say it...

Sexy oppose to cute? (not that cute isn't a compliement:))

Heck, even workout clothing can be a nightmare...but that's another story :D

Hello my fellow petite ladies!!!

A couple questions... which is probably going to seem dumb.... what is NHE? I'm getting back into the low-carbing routine and am trying to find the "one" (angel voices sung on the background of that one "AHhhhhhhh!")

And..... Any ladies find a weight routine that really toned up those muscles? Especially the abs... evil, evil flub.... :bash:

Thanks!

Greenwings, vyyz, ArtyMuffin - Check out the exercise forum. There a couple of new girls, Built and LegWarmers who really know their stuff. They are the ones who have been helping me with getting the NHE thing working and have some great suggestions for routines and stuff. There's a lot of good info over there for women wanting to lean down and get sculpted.

I've been finding out for myself that it's true that muscle takes up less space than fat. I've always been short and stocky and I'm beginning to get quite sleek since I've been lifting really hard and heavy. Not even a hint of Arnie. :)

Thu, May-13-04, 07:14
Sadly, I think I'm going to have to let go of that goal (lean definition). I lifted hard and heavy for about eight years, messed up my neck in the process. No cuts...because I can't burn off the fat. Finally got fed up and saw a "good" doctor last week, same story..."you JUST have a slow metabolism...sorry, can't help you...just accept it." I figured I might have a thyroid problem or a hormonal imbalance, but since nobody will help me figure that out, I guess I need to quit beating a dead horse and try to be happy with the way things are. It could be worse. :( I'll check it out anyway, just out of curiosity...

Aw Greenwings. These doctors really suck! Wouldn't it be nice, just once, to have someone who actually listened and took you seriously?

Greenwings, I'm sorry that your doctor needs better bedside manners...'just accept it'?!? That's not nice to say at all. Don't get discouraged. Fight, fight, fight for a healthy life!

I hope that things will work out for you Greenwings, don't give up!
You may want to consult a specialist or a homeopathic doctor in your area rather then a GP

My mother has a overactive thyroid problem that plauged her for years (ie medication, weight gain, mood swings...)

One day mom accompanied me to my allergist/dermatologist specialist and the specialist told mom to try eliminating a big portion of her white processed grains and sugars intake.

Also to get into the habit of peeling the skins from apples and thoroughly wash all veggies/fruits (chemical pesticieds), b/c it could affect her medication.

She did, lost some weight, began 'Sweating to the Oldies', and finally, her steriod intake was change drastically that now she manages by eating right and working out with light dumbells.

She doesn't believe in Atkins, but strangely enough she eats a heck of a lot of fried fish & baked chicken, dark green veggies, fruits, liters of water....

(just don't tell her she's doing a quasi-Atkins :p )

Greenwings, don't give up and just "accept it." I consulted a doctor because I couldn't lose weight eating a "healthy" low fat diet. She claimed that I was not really much overweight, so I should live with it.

I was disgusted, so I decided to eat the so-called "wrong way" - low carb. It has taken me 15 months to get to 120, and I still have more to lose, but it does work. After losing 3 pounds on the first two weeks of Induction, I stalled for SEVEN MONTHS. I did not give up, though, because what is the alternative?

I'm 5'1" and mostly lurk, but thought I should speak up since our statistics are so similar.

BTW, when you had your thyroid checked, was it just total thyroid (TSH) that was checked?

I agree that dr's really are evil. They are not very compassionate to someone who's at all overweight. I had one dr tell me that I was fat and needed to lose weight. I wanted to smack her. Like I didn' have a mirror. I asked her for some advice as to what she'd reccomend doing. She said "exercise". No joke! I thought since she had something to say about it that she might offer some helpful solution like try biking or anything. Nope just"exercise".

Just a bit of FYI for anyone wanting to join us. Tammy and I are starting a challenge today. The rules are one needs to exercise at least 5 days a week. And must not cheat with non LC foods. Also you are allowed up to 3 drinks a week. That's it. We sure hope that some of you will be interrested and join us.

I should know that you will always make me feel better.....I did see on tv on some talk show, that a Dr. was saying if you are tired and not getting enough sleep, it is a reason to eat and not stick to whatever WOE you are on...it certainly made sense to me as I am averaging about 5 hours of sleep a night......I am trying to start a business, and taking a business class, and making goat milk soaps.....plus the family, farm etc.....so right now I don't forsee me getting much more sleep.....just have to have stronger will power I guess....Thanks for listening.....you guys all make me feel much better! Hello Ladies,

Do you have space for another petite one?I'm 5"2 and 128lbs.My goal is 110 by the end of June.I was on Induction for 6 days but I stopped it. I want to start again after the long week-end.I'm glad I found you because It's gonna be easier having all your support.
Please tell me...the weight that you lose in the first 2 weeks of induction is just water? I lost 6 pounds in my first 6 days of induction but they came back within 2 weeks (well...not all of them, just 4).Thank you.

Hi again petites,

I'm going away for Memorial day weekend. Should I do another induction starting tomorrow? I might want to have "fun" when I get there...!?!

No, Madcat26, I don't think it's all water. Some of it is, but I think you really do lose the bad stuff. I know I did...at least on the first induction, anyway.

Fri, May-21-04, 19:00
Hi...I think that I read that your fat cells are stored with water...as you lose fat you naturally loss water too. Also atkins is highly diruretic...Carbs tend to hold water so I guess when you lower them as much as in induction you lose alot of water at first.

I read too that the body is 80% water. wow! Guess that is why one can gain 5lbs during "that time".

Greenwings, Maybe you could find a smarter, more sympathetic doctor. I finally found one who prescribed thyroid even though my tests for hypothyroid were low normal. It's made a huge difference. I am going to read the posts from petites daily. I have been nibbling this and that and sabotaging my wieght loss. I am determined to get back to walking 15 miles a week and sticking to LC. thanks for the motivation I get from reading your posts, Liz2Crow

Lost 10 more. Am busy with a new grandson and my daughter and I are low carbing together while she is visiting. Yay. Had been stuck for 6 months. I have just been too busy to sit down in the evenings and usually I am a big couch potato after work. Also filled the house with "legal" stuff and a few lc sweet treats which really helps.

Good luck to everyone.

Been off the wagon a while and am back up to 200...so I am going to try it again.....thanks to PKV for searching me out...I am so discouraged....been under a lot of stress and I eat ...that is all there is to it! Stress triggers me to eat...so I guess I should figure out ways to avoid stress! Sounds simple, why can't I do it? I have to do it! I am sick of being 200 lbs!

Hi Carol,

Have you tried Relacore? A bunch of people tried it on this forum and they seem to have great results with it for lowering stress. Of course, I had the opposite effect but I gave mine to DH and he is doing great on those!

It is supposed to be good for people who gain weight when they are stressed. It usually lower the stress level, lower the appetite and give you a lot of energy. On the down site, I found it expensive.

Hi Ladies -

I certainly should be in this thread. I am 5 foot even and am trying to get to a slightly normal weight for someone my height. It so good to see other people on this board who are height challenged. Everyone I see that weighs near what I weigh is the jolly green giant.

I have been on Atkins since the end of February and have lost 27lbs so far. Not as good as I would like. I think I should have lost at least 45 by now. But, I rarely exercise which I know is a big no-no. I am trying to get better with that and "make" time to do it, but it is wild when you work full-time, have a toddler and then have to do the wife/mother role when you get off work every day. But, I am realizing slowly that I have to take care of myself and no one else will do it but me. Plus, I need to be healthy and fit for me and my family.

Enough said. Glad to have found all of you . . .

Thu, Jun-24-04, 21:23
Hi Calico Cat,

Is Relacore something you get a prescription for? or is it over the counter? I work part time as a fitness for duty technician, and I do drug and alcohol screening in the workplace and I am regulated/restricted more than anyone.....although something to relieve stress sounds heavenly right now......

MilanoSI, I know what you mean about the weight/height thing....my DH and I were just watching the NBA draft, and this guy was 6 foot nine and weighs 210...yikes one foot 8 inches taller than me and only 10 lbs heavier....maybe I should play basketball? LOL

Well I have stuck to induction today, with the exception of 2 strawberries that I picked from the garden...just plain forgot.....tomorrow I will do better! G'nite all!

Good job on having a good week...it is harder in the summer...Ice cream....cookouts...potato salad....ugg they all get to me....today I would have about killed for a Klondike bar! LOL...maybe I should be in the commercial!
I did stick pretty close.....a handful of strawberries I hope won't kill things....we picked about 10 quarts from the garden yesterday. I made 2 pies, and put a bunch up for jam.....but I didn't taste any of the sweet stuff, save for the few berries....tiny victories.....better go, have to get up at 5 am to set up for the farmer's market.

HI!!
YAY!!! Small women!! Me too!! I`m 5 feet tall exactly. I started at 152, and I am down to 126, but I am hoping to get to 115. It`s amazing to me to read some of the posts from some of the less tiny people on this site who can laugh off 4-5 lb fluctuations. 4-5 pounds can be a whole dress size for me!!

Anyway, I`m thrilled to find a community of fellow petites.

Any of you short with large builds? I did that fingers around the wrist test to determine my build (yeah, I know...not really all that scientific) and my thumb and forefinger don't remotely touch. That is supposed to mean that I have a large frame, despite my stature. This makes things even more frustrating, because clothing manufacturers (not to mention insurance weight charts) assume that if I am short, I must also have no hips or bust, or god forbid, a rib cage....lol.

Anyway, nice to find this thread!!

Now my realistic goal for a healthy BMI is 123. Where do you all carry your weight? I am an apple with normal legs and really carry the bulk of weight in the middle, all the way around. Just got a new bra (smaller than before) 38DDD. I still feel huge!!! It is getting so old! I have had thoughts of breast reduction surgery, but then what happens when you lose after that? Hi Happie!
I am pretty close to my goal weight now, but at my all time high of 170, I carried my weight everywhere!! I was a DD cup size then. Now that I am down to 126, I am a B+, so I`m glad I didn`t do anything while I was heavy-- I`d look like a boy!! I am an hourglass figure-- current measurements at 35" bust, 26 waist, 36 hip, but my waist mostly dissappeared while I was heavier.

I`m sure you can meet your goal-- what kind of workouts are people doing? I just recently (in the last 6 months) switched from mostly aerobics classes into a weight-training program supplemented with cardio a few days a week, and I have noticed MAJOR changes.

Anyway, gotta get some work done-- hope everyone has a great day!

Trouble was, the last time I lost weight my boob size shrunk to 32/34, but my cup size stayed at G...so when I was showing off my new figure in the pubs/clubs I had men coming up to me saying "are those real???". I was really offended that they thought I might have had surgery!!!

I always wanted a reduction but have heart trouble so the doctors used to advise against it until I had an operation for my heart, then when I was due to have the heart surgery I asked the surgeon about having the reduction afterwards and he said NO WAY cos of the medication I would be on!!! :( u just can't win.... :D

Cheeze!! WOOOOOOOWWWWW!!!! You are amazing!!! That is incredible.

Congrats!

I`m on my way to the park to get some sun and a little 3 mile walk in-- but I had to stop and gush a little about your accomplishment. Welcome to the shorty section!

Thanks Cheeze! I didn`t come as far as you did though--- and it`s always the last 10-15 pounds that sux the most to get off. They are persistant pounds. I`ve been stuck at the same weight for the last three weeks. Uggh.
Too much life stress I guess.
I took a few super long walks in the park this weekend though which is always good for the body and soul.

You know what I think the hardest part about maintaining diet and exercise is? Finding ways to reward yourself that aren`t involved with food, wine, or shopping. I had this fantasy this weekend that someone just made me princess for a day. Sigh. It`s like being 8 years old all over again.

But at least I fit into my skinny jeans. LOL.

Anyway, have a great week ladies!

I am 52 years old and 5'3"...I am glad i found this particular forum...I know what it feels like when you're younger weiging 126...maybe 10 lbs more than you want, and taller and bigger people will tell you..."You don't need to loose weight"...Well, for me that was 85 lbs ago, 30 years or more ago, and now I'm up to where people tell me..."WoW..you let yourself go...You need to loose that weight...sigh...A couple of years back I had lost 40 lbs and stayed low carb for 9 months...but then, I started adding carbs, more carbs, and then back addicted, AGAIN...Well, today is my third day back on low carb WOE, and I hope that I can get back on the wagon, and loose on down to where I would like to be 120...I'm going to change my goal weight down to there....This is my weight that best fits my brains "conception". of who I am...I am a skinny lady in a fat body...and I, with the help of others can lose this weight...

Hi ladies-
I'm 5'2" and if my scale is right I weigh 138.5....would like my first goal to be around 120. I'll decide at that point how much more I need to lose! :-)

I'm just doing low-carb....have only been doing it for about 1.5 weeks. I need to start exercising as well. I also go to school full time so my life is rather hectic right now, but exercising is a MUST for me.

Welcome to you two, Patricia and Deb,

It is nice to see this thread active again!

Remember that taking more time to get to our goal weight will ensure that we really made some changes to the way we are eating, not just follow a diet.

Losing weight is great but never getting it back is even better. Anyway, that’s what I am repeating to myself since the scale is not moving!

I would like to join this group. I am 5'4", started Atkins last July. I have lost 16 pounds so far(Christmas and the month of February were bad for me). I have started induction again, I'm on the second week of it. I'm hoping to reach 125 by June. Which should give me lost of time to work on sticking with this diet. It is so hard, when ever so often a hamburger of pizza would taste so good.

Is there a weigh in day or are we just giving support to one another?

Welcome to you too Deb!

Another Deb, I must start using your usernames before I get confused :daze:

Pizza… Actually, I went a long time without it thinking it tastes so good. Then, one day,
I had some and it didn’t tastes as good as I thought. Since that day, I don’t crave it so much. I guess the longer we stick with this WOE, the easier it gets… Now, if only I could stop craving bread… But the last time I check, it tasted even better than I remember!

Have a nice low-carb day, everyone!

Hi,
What I like about Atkins is I can have that piece of pizza, behave the next day and still lose weight. So I usually pick one day a week that I can have something with either bread, rice or pasta. I might only be losing about a pound a week, but the way I see it, I'm still losing. Maybe that's why it's taking me so long to lose this weight. lol

Hi everyone-
Thanks for the welcomes! :)

Is anyone in this thread going through menopause. :help: My weight loss doesn't seem to be going so slowly, but these hot flashes! Yuck!

What type of plan are you following Karen? I saw FF/CALP...I'm not familiar with those acronyms.

I'm going through menopause and am taking bioidentical HRT. I am losing extremely slowly. I will probably go back to 20grams of carbs and stay there till I reach goal. I have joined Curves and the exercise helps but I think I need more than 3 times a week. Let me know if get any good advice. I could use it I have 35 pounds to lose. Have you tried any supplements?

Hi Liz-
I'm not taking any supplements, but have a lot of them in my cupboard!

I'm just not a very good pill taker. I do use, however, progesterone creme twice a day. I just started last week, but it seems to be helping.

Exercise is defintely key in weight loss - along with sensible eating of course. I'm really coming to understand that calories do matter and the bottom line is take in less calories than you body burns and weight loss should occur. I happen to prefer the low-carb way because I feel better - no heartburn and seem to stay satisfied longer.

I have taken a one week "break" from low carbing. I will be starting a Curves Challenge next week incorporating exercise, low carb and a diet shake. I sometimes think low carbing is too many calories for those of us in menopause. Have you read Christine Northrup's book, "The Wisdom of Menopause." It has been so helpful. She describes some difficulty losing with LC. I am taking bioidentical (non-synthetic) estrogen and progesterone based on recommendations from her book. Other than metabolic resistance I have had very good luck with HRT. I have reversed my osteoporosis. While losing the next 30 pounds is important, I may have to settle for a very slow loss.

I also feel so much better on low carb. I am no longer borderline diabetic after losing 17 pounds on Atkins.

Thanks for your reply,
Liz

Liz-
I think too many calories in ANY way of eating will not produce results...I'm not one of those people who think calories don't matter. I just happen to like the LC (or maybe I should say moderate) way of eating because I feel so much better - no heartburn, no sudden "crashes" -etc.
