Those of you who are on the Specific Carbohydrate diet are aware that inulin is illegal and put in the same category with FOS, which is illegal. According to the SCD inulin is a FOS that feeds bacteria, good and bad equally so it needs to be avoided. However, I have come accross this guy's website and found the following reasoning for the pro-s of inulin:

I'd like to know what you all think.

Just out of curiosity, I grabbed one of the articles he cites and quickly did a search for inulin... there were no references to it in the paper. I didn't actually read the paper.
I think that no one really knows. This stuff really hasn't been studied enough. I heard recently they only know a small fraction of the number of bugs that live in people's guts. I guess if I were going to try it I'd pay attention to what my gut says about it. Does it cause flatulence, cramping or diarrhea? No? Then it might be ok.

Hi Tunkany,
My feeling is that Elaine knew what she was doing. ;)
Have you read this page (http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/inulin.htm) explaining why it is forbidden on SCD?
Cheers,
Roz

Yes I have read it and so did Duncan Crow who wrote the article. He says that inulin and FOS are different. There is a difference in the chain-length of the carbohydrate and that the pathogenic bacteria lack the enzyme to digest it. However, I tend to favor Elaine's view, as Nancy also mentioned that there are so many species of bugs and only a handful of them have been researched. Who knows what else is down there that will have the enzyme to use inulin. I also recall something about Elaine saying these guys can mutate and adapt, so even if in vitro they don't eat inulin, maybe in the gut thay adapt themselves to eating whatever carbohydrate is available. Yeah, I'd better stick with the SCD view.
I was thinking, even if there is some truth to this FOS thing, why not just eat bananas with my yogurt. Bananas are supposed to have a lot of FOS in them. This way my lactobacilli can have the natural FOS?

This study concludes that polisaccharides including inulin are easily fermentable by two Kleibsella species. K. oxytoca and K. pneumoniae.

Isn't Kleibsella pneumoniae responsible for example for AS? Nancy should know....

Well, most of the medical community would say "no" but one guy says he's found antibodies to it in almost all AS patients. You know how that goes!

Well, this explains why Dh has bloating and indigestion fromdreamfields pasta, which is coated with inulin.
