Once upon a time, I made the mistake of ordering some kind of beauty book from Prevention Magazine. Now I'm getting all their mail-order book offerings.
The latest? A book that will enable anyone to TAKE THE WEIGHT OFF AND KEEP IT OFF WITHOUT DIETING OR EXERCISE. Of course, the promotional flyer proclaims all the "secret" information this (expensive) book will provide. But I can tell what the bottom line is: low-cal/low-fat.
The flyer contains a recipe for "healthy" brownies--containing unbleached white flour, 2 cups of sugar, and chunky chocolate. What did they leave out? The egg yolks and the vegetable oil--in other words, the fat.
There's a sidebar blasting low-carb, with the usual misinformation. And the text goes so far as to say that "thin people" eat the right foods, while "fat people" eat the wrong foods. What crap.
To be fair, I am quite sure that people who obtain this book and follow these instructions forever will lose weight and learn to maintain a healthy weight. But how many people can actually do it?
Thanks to Dr. Atkins, I have finally been able to change my dietary habits significantly. I have finally learned a strategy I can live with. I have finally achieved peace (not complacency!) with my weight management issues. And when I come across promotional material like this, I just feel frustrated on behalf of so many who have failed, as I have, on "diets" that don't work, time after time.
Thanks for listening. I hear Amens! from the choir already.
