when choosing breads, what is the difference between "whole grain" and "whole wheat"? which is the better choice, for SB?

'Whole wheat' is a whole grain. There are other grains besides wheat.

but why is it that when reading stuff about SBD, they always recommend "whole grain" this and whole grain that....is it better than whole wheat?

This was really hard for me to explain to my husband, too, who does the grocery shopping sometimes. He'd always bring back this "wheat" bread that had "enriched bleached flour" as the first ingredient.
Manufacturers can use the term "whole wheat" even if the flour is a mixture of white flour and whole wheat flour. Whole grain-ers can pull a similar trick, which is why every cereal from coco puffs to Total now has the "whole grain" label.
When selecting breads, I tend to choose a lower carb one (which usually uses a lower- glycemic flour) or a light whole wheat bread, which tends to supplement the wheat flour with low glycemic flour. Even though we're not carb counters, almost any sliced bread that has over 13g of carbs a slice seems to have some white flour stuck in there.
Arnold's Stone ground wheat (in the purple package) is a yummy one that's not low carb or light.

When buying any bread or product, read the list of ingredients before you put it in your cart. If it says bleached flour in the list of ingredients, don't buy it. Only buy breads that say whole grain in the list of ingredients....its that simple!!
So whole wheat bread is not the same or equal to whole grain wheat bread. There are even some marking on bags that give "Good" or "Excellent" depending on the percentage of whole grain used. :idea:

okay well the bread i recently bought is by Orowheat which has 17 grams of carbs per 2 slices and 6 grams of fibre...so i supose thats pretty good, making it only 5.5carbs a slice...the only thing i don't really like about it is that its sweetened with sucralose or something but you can actually taste the sweetness...for bread it's just kinda weird to have a sweet taste...=\

Some people have Wheat allergies or Intolerance and are not able to eat any Whole Wheat Products. You can buy other Whole Grain breads like Rye Breads, Oatbreads, Pumpernickel.
The gals already explained what the difference is. I for one try to get a Bread that has no wheat at all in it and has at least 3g fiber per serving. The bread I am eating right now (rye) is a German made Bread that is made with Whole grains and it has 6g of Fiber per Serving.
Oh and on SB we don't count Carbs at all.

If you can find Ezekiel whole sprouted grain bread, its really good and is not made with flour. :agree:

Sorry, I wasn't including the carb count for counting's sake, Meizimau...but when I was trying to explain the whole "which bread is okay" thing to DH, we found that (as a rule of thumb) the less white flour a bread had, the lower in carbs it was.
I just thought that might help here!
