Hello people, I was just wondering what people think of Diet Coke, if you were to drink one every day or so at lunch, would it affect a low carb diet much ? Some days I just can't look at a bottle of water at lunch.
Thanks

I drank diet coke for years, I mean years too. Never thought I would ever give that stuff up. Got a cold a month or so back and just couldn't drink it, first time in my life!
I wonder now if it kept my cravings up for sweets? Don't seem to have as many cravings like I use too?
It never stopped me from losing weight. I don't think one is going to hurt you. I would drink at least 5 - 6 a day  Now I hardly touch it.

I don't know... I felt so sick when I gave up diet coke.. terrible headaches, nausea.. I know it was caffiene withdrawal, but with everything i've read on aspartamine I'd look for a diet soda not sweetened with AS #951.
I expect one glass a day wouldn't hurt too much, but i'd be reluctant to drink if I had a choice.
Just my 2 cents (for what its worth).

Personally, I think it's best for people to try and avoid all sweets (even artifical ones) just for awhile, to break the habit.
After that, avoid anything containing Aspartame (which, if you're in the US, includes Diet Coke). It may stall weight loss, may cause insulin surges and may have serious health implications other than that. Instead use sucralose--in the US, Diet Rite is the only brand sweetened with it; in Canada I believe things are different; I haven't a clue about UK or Aus!

I agree with razzle.
Aspartame has got to be the #2 legal poison of the 20th century, right after cigarettes.
My friend (she's 40) is headed for a liver transplant because of drinking 2-L bottle of diet pop every day for 20 years. She's been diagnosed with cirosis. She was flabbergasted because she doesn't overdo alcohol - dr's told her it was the high doses of aspartame over such a long period of time.
Does anybody else remember that when diet drinks first came out, the stores (at least in the Toronto area where I was raised) wouldn't sell them to minors?

Hi Kim or anyone who can answer this :q: :q: :q:
I was reading the posts concerning the diet drinks. What is AS#951? I usually drink A&W Diet Rootbeer?
What diet drink have you found to be the best one to drink for the low carb diet?
Also, I drink coffee in the mornings. And I cannot drink it black, so I am adding the half and half. I suppose as long as I add the carbs up and keep it under the 20 for the first 2 weeks, I will be OK?????????????????
Love to know your opinon!
Thanks...

Boy LC Sponge, that would scare anyone away from using asparatime. I swore off of it years ago when I heard it had been linked to Multiple Sclerosis. I used to drink it alot. I couldn't control my use of it. I would buy a 24 pack of Diet Pepsi and drink it all within a few days. Since I gave it up I can't stand the taste. It tastes like bug spray to me now. I remember seeing that Splenda was in Diet Rite, so I plan to try that. But since I've given up "diet" drinks, I drink so much more water. I know that is better for me, but also, I think I was dehydrating myself before I started to drink tons of water.
I do drink coffee in the morning--still like my caffeine. Ice tea is a good alternative to diet drinks...even herbal teas. :yum: Victoria

#951 is the international code for Aspartame.
When you buy your product check the label in ingredients. Most companies will list the code for the sweetener used.
Here is a URL that lists all food additives and their number.
I think caffiene affects different people in different ways. Personally, I prefer to drink sparking mineral water or soda water (or plain). Its amazing how you get used to not drinking the flavoured stuff. I might have a glass of diet ginger ale maybe 2 or 3 times a week (not sweetened with aspartame).
Cheers

Victoria - Coffee will be the LAST thing I give up.
Happily - coffee has been around a lot longer than aspartame, and nobody's dropping dead from drinking espresso. :)

Aspartame is easy to see in products, because the shelf name is Nutrasweet. If it has nutrasweet, it has aspertame. The trials are still out on whether nutrasweet/aspartame actually has any connection to MS or other diseases, but I'm inclined to believe it. I'm trying to eventually wean myself off of all man-made chemical food additives, as I don't think anything of that nature could possibly be good for us, including splenda products (though I'm still using them now until I'm at least broken from refined sugar :) ...a lesser evil, ya know.
I suggest you go to a non-carbonated beverage (like crystal light) first, then wean off of that - splenda and lemon juice in water can lemonade you right up :)

I have been reading all of the BAD stuff about the aspartene etc the fake sugars.
My question is: Are ya'll talking only about the unhealthy part of it or are you speaking that drinking or eating anything with the Aspartene will cause the Atkins diet not to work?
I have been eating Sweet and Low for years and I don't think it has killed me yet, so I have no concern with the small amount that I use of it. I just want to be sure ya'll are not talking about the fact that any of the fake sugars will PREVENT ME FROM LOSING WEIGHT ON THE LOW CARB DIET??? :q:
I plan to use some of the Sweet and Low or Splenda, sparingly. Should I count eat package 1 carb? Will these keep me from losing weight if I eat everything else Low Carb?

Hi all! There are so many problems with aspartame I don't know where to start...I'm sure some of you heard of short term memory loss...I must have forgotten to tell ya! Seriously though, I had a friend who worked in a spice plant and they packaged it with their diet products...despite protective gear to the EXTREME and extra pay...NO ONE wanted to volunteer for the duty!! The workers comp claims were extensive...some short term...and yes, some long term...I have friends who are diabetic who have had no other choice for so long I worry about them for just those kind of reasons LC Sponge! Of course as with many variations in the LC diet...YMMV!! You have to try and see what works for you...when in doubt... leave it out for a while and then see if you have any changes after you add it back in! But if you can do without it, do as the evidence continues to add up that it really is not good for you.
We do have one new splenda sweetened drink on the market though, it's called Diet Ice Botanicals, and so far no headaches..no cravings...no carbs...just for an occasional treat as I am a strong proponet of WATER!!! I hope you see it a store near you soon! Best of luck to all on the Diet Coke Dilemma!

I'm with bsayne - water is my best liquid friend.
Then there's the occasional martini :)

Yes it can. With some people, the taste of anything sweet can cause an insulin spike. You may or may not be one of those people.
The best drink is and will always be water.

I will pay particular attention to how much artifical sweetner I use. If I only had 1 - 2diet A&W rootbeers a day, do you think that could keep me from losing? :q:

If you are one of the people who are sensitive, yes.
We are all in charge of our own body experiments. No one can speculate for anyone else. We can advise from our own experience, but none of us can fortell the future.
A & W rootbeer gives you a "kick", but you don't need it to survive. And, what worked at one point, may stop working in the future.
The best way to LC is to pare food back to the basics. You can add later on, but it's best to keep it simple at first.

Karen's right...also, since a taste for sweets is what got us fat, then why not see if we can get rid of it. If we can't, we'll retain the urge to have sweets, and one day, sooner or later, we'll have a craving, nothing with sucralose or aspartame or stevia will be available...or the stress in our lives will get to be too much and we'll turn to our old standby comfort sweets to self-medicate. But if we're out of the habit, recidivism into full-blown sugar addiction is (I truly believe) less likely.
If you quit using sugars and fake sugars, vegetables will start tasting super sweet to you and you'll find yourself pushing away even the too-sweet veggies.
Treat yourself well by drinking water and herbal tea. Think of changing your WOE as a way of being kind to a body you've abused for too long.
