Wow I'm never eating sugar again! Thanks for this I need constant reminders; I see sugary food and my mind goes completely blank about insulin.
Did I calculate this right? He said 20% of your diet should be carbs. If I have a minimum of 1400 cal a day that would be 70 total carbs? Meaning for maintenance not for weight loss?

Sorry -- I was not recommending that people follow everything he says exactly. Just that more than 50% of what he says is good info.
I try for zero carbs per day.

Another words just ignore this part?
-He said 20% of your diet should be carbs.

Depending on your diet -- maybe.
There may be some people that are in maintenance, exercise a lot, and don't eat much.
Your body will burn carbs and alcohol first and then burn your fat. The fewer carbs and alcohol you put into your body - the more fat your body has to burn.

He's such a scare monger. The only fish to eat is wild Alaskan salmon?! No shrimp and lobster?! The acrylamide scare is far from being a proven fact but he throws is around like its gospel. And in my opinion the trans fat issue is also overblown, I don't think we've seen any negative results of trans fats as part of a low carb diet, only when they are being downed along with loads of carbs.
Don't eat doughnuts. OK that is one bit of good advice.
I can see where he would have quite a following, repeating the fashionable scare words makes him naturally believable to the nutritionally neurotic.

Just read another article that put to bed, again, the acrylamide scare. But guys like Mercola will never let it go. I really prefer Dr. Eades advice. He's just so much more credible.

Okay, not sure why you guys are so negative without giving examples, so
Let's review it starting with beginners. Remember these are people that still believe in the food pyramid - that all carbs are good carbs - meat and fat are bad. They think that if it comes in a box, can, or bag -- but is low in meat and fat -- it is okay to eat as much as you want. What I thought 3 years ago.
Step 1: At least one third of your food should be uncooked.
Step 2: Eat more vegetables.
Step 3: Keep your vegetables fresh.
Step 4: Limiting sugar is critical.
Step 5: Avoid hypoglycemia.
Step 6: Learn to distinguish physical food cravings from emotional food cravings.
Protein
Lesson 1: Look at the package.
Lesson 2: Eggs are an excellent source of protein.
Lesson 3: Restrict your intake of dairy products
Lesson 4: You can eat all meats in this phase
Lesson 5: Become aware of your soy intake
Lesson 6: Think about your fish and seafood intake
Lesson 7: Nuts and seeds are okay for now, but...
Lesson 8: Watch your bean and legume intake
Carbs
Lesson 1: Find out your insulin level
Lesson 2: Scale back, or completely eliminate, all grains, beans and legumes in this phase; the higher your insulin levels, the more ambitious your grain-elimination should be.
Lesson 3: Eat the best vegetables
Lesson 4: Reduce your intake of sweeteners
Fats
Lesson 1: It is the type of fat that matters, not the amount
Lesson 2: Learn about the importance of omega-3 and omega-6 fats
Lesson 3: Learn about the benefits of fish oil.
Lesson 4: How to Know If You Are Taking Too Much Fish Oil
Beverages
Lesson 1: Drink 1 quart of water for every 50 pounds of body weight per day
Lesson 2: Drink your water at the right pace.
Lesson 3: Drink healthy water
Lesson 4: You can use lemon juice to add a bit of flavor and normalize your body's pH level
Lesson 5: Assess your water delivery system
Lesson 6: Monitor all other fluids.
Supplements
Lesson 1: Chromium may help sugar cravings
Lesson 2: Avoid iron in your supplements
Lesson 3: Carefully evaluate your need for a multi-vitamin
Lesson 4: Make sure you get enough vitamin D.
Lesson 5: Be careful with Tylenol
Lesson 6: Smell your vitamins
Lesson 7: If you are on the go, consider "supplementing" with a convenient but real food source
Lifestyle
Lesson 1: Practice techniques, such as EFT, to control anxiety and stress, eliminate self-doubt and negativity, and instill self-control and peace of mind.
Lesson 2: Control your eating habits
Lesson 3: Make sure you always get a good night's sleep
Lesson 4: Start exercising, especially if you need to lose weight
Lesson 5: If you're smoking, don't quit now
Lesson 6: Minimize drugs
Overall - I would say this is a very impressive list.
The one I disagree with the most is "don't take supplements"
second most disagree able is "don't stop smoking"
So why all the negativity?

Mercola is a quack.
Agree completely. He makes some good points, no doubt, but I can't take much of what he says seriously with his neurotic diatribes. He's been in trouble with the FTC for making false claims on his supplement line and backs up very few of his claims with any good data.
