So I got a weight bench for Christmas and some starter (5lb) dumbbells. Can someone recommend a good beginner's video for learning the correct way to begin doing weights? I know absolutely nothing about how to use them and am very out of shape.
All I know for sure (maybe) is that you can hurt yourself if you do it wrong. Any advice would be appreciated!

Congratulations on getting the weight bench and weights. I found a weight bench and 140# of weights under my tree this year too. Santa's sleigh must have been really heavy. LOL

Not sure if it's still available, but Tony Little had a great beginning weight training video out back in the early 90's. He gives good form pointers if you can stand the constant chatter.
Collage has Keys to Weighttraining by Bill Pearl which looks like an excellent intro to weights.
Firm and WHFN both have good beginner weight videos.

A lot of workout places (i.e. Bally's, YMCA) offer a day or week of free use of their gym and some of them offer a free training session on how to use equiptment.
If you can find a local gym that will do that you can learn first hand the right form for weight lifting. Congrats on the first step towards getting your muscles in shape! :)

Thanks, everybody, for the help. I am on vacation this week and the motel we stayed at last night didn't have an on premises fitness room. Instead they sent us to a nearby health club (wellness center?) It was early and not busy so I asked if someone could give me some advice about weights. I got a super nice trainer who not only showed me how to lift weights but explained a lot AND measured my body fat with calipers. ALL FOR FREE!
I would not have thought of asking if I hadn't just read your message, nets33. I really appreciate it. I enjoyed the whole experience (wow, I can't believe I said that!) and I'm thinking about looking into a similar place to join when we get home. I think this place was affiliated with a hospital or rehab center as there were a lot of old guys there. It didn't seem as intimidating as the Gold's Gym we once visited on vacation. I think I might like lifting weights!

Glad to hear you were able to get a free lesson! I started weight lifting with a friend who showed me the ropes. It made it much easier to learn how to lift properly.

I too got weights (140 pounds worth) and a weight bench for Christmas. DH is really wanting me to use this home stuff, since it was a gift, normally I go to the gym which has smith machines etc. The other day I stopped at the library and picked up some books. Smart girls do dumbells by Judith Sherman-Wolin is excellent. The copyright is 2004 so you should still be able to find it. I pulled it out this week when I had 3 early mornings at work and couldn't go to the gym. I did some exercises that I normally do at the gym with cables just using my free weights and I got a terrific workout. Free weights are a great way to get a work-out.

I have found the Gold's Gym Personal Trainer Series Volume 1 to be a great workout! It is out of "print", but you can get it on sites like Amazon for a buck. It's pretty cool because it shows you how to get results fast by using stuff you have at home. It produces results fast.

You can also rent them from blockbuster or net flicks to see which ones you like best before buying them. You can also try them free at the library!
