Common alternative treatment for liver disease is found to be ineffective

Results of high-quality randomized clinical trials have determined that milk thistle extract, a widely used alternative medication, may not have any significant influence on the course of patients with alcoholic liver disease or hepatitis B or C liver disease. These findings are published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology. According to the previous studies, milk thistle extracts have been shown to possess properties that protect against various hepatotoxins, including the prevention of lipid perioxidation, which is frequent in all stages of liver damage in alcoholic and non-alcoholic liver disease.

"The ironic fact is," notes Christian Gluud of the Copenhagen Trial Unit, Center for Clinical Intervention Research at the Copenhagen University Hospital, "that even though milk thistle and milk thistle extracts have been widely examined, we are still not in a situation where we can exclude a potential beneficial or harmful effect."

In this study, researchers aimed to determine the exact benefits or harm in using milk thistle to treat affected patients. Over 900 patients with the aforementioned types of liver disease were studied in these trials over a period of six months, in groups treated with milk thistle versus placebo treatment. No significant effects were observed on mortality or complication of the disease. Further, milk thistle was not associated with any significant risk of adverse events.

"It would be logical to stop the use of milk thistle products, not to reimburse any use, to stop the information that milk thistle products may be used, and to support further trials," adds Gluud.

not sure if this article was funded by a pharma company or not. But on the plus side ...

I have a high exposure to exhaust gases as well as significant environmental pollution. I started taking Silymarin a while back--maybe two years?--and I can definitely tell a difference in the quality and severity of "hangovers" after bad exhaust days.

There's not enough information in the extract to know:

Were the patients still drinking?

What other conditions did they have? HepC and B come with a lot of other problems. What condition were the patients in when they started the program?

What variety and strength of the extract did they use?

Tell me more about compliance.

And then--what exactly were they hoping to find?

Could also be one of those cases where the patients are simply too far along to get the benefit. I'm not trying to treat liver disease--I'm trying to prevent it. As far as I can tell, it's working, but it's really hard to do a double-blind study when you only have one rat.

I'm my only rat, too, LOL!!! But like I tell people. I'm 50 years old, I'm obese. I take a ton of supplements and have for years. My family has a history of high blood pressure and heart disease. I don't take any prescriptions. I have no health problems whatsoever except for bad knees that I got in an accident, and that condition is aggrevated by weight and wheat.

It's a lot better profile than a lot of other people at my weight or even lighter. I'll keep taking my supplements!!!

THEY can do all the studies they want to prove they don't work!!! I'll go by the results of my one rat, lol!!!

No significant effects were observed on mortality or complication of the disease.

Um... they only studied it for six months. If you're going to look at "big picture" factors like that, I'd expect a study of at least a few years.

If it was only a six-month study, I'd like to have seen what happened with their liver enzyme profiles.
