The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food
Chemistry (Vol 53, pp. 9436-9445), is the most comprehensive
analysis of nut and seed varieties to date. Twenty-seven
different products, including American peanut butter, were
evaluated and it was found that sesame seeds and wheat germ
contained the highest concentration of phytosterols with over
400 mg per 100 g.

Some Indian consume atleast a teaspoon full of sesame seeds
every day . Is that OK to be effective in controlling
cholesterol ? Apart from this in some southern states
sesame seed oil is the cooking medium .

The original study:

J Agric Food Chem. 2005 Nov 30;53(24):9436-45.

Phytosterol composition of nuts and seeds commonly consumed in
the United States.

Phillips KM, Ruggio DM, Ashraf-Khorassani M.

Departments of Biochemistry and Chemistry, Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg,
Virginia 24061.

Phytosterols were quantified in nuts and seeds commonly
consumed in the United States. Total lipid extracts were
subjected to acid hydrolysis and then alkaline saponfication,
and free sterols were analyzed as trimethylsilyl derivatives
by capillary GC-FID and GC-MS. Delta(5)-Avenasterol was
quantified after alkaline saponification plus direct analysis
of the glucoside. Sesame seed and wheat germ had the highest
total phytosterol content (400-413 mg/100 g) and Brazil nuts
the lowest (95
mg/100 g). Of the products typically consumed as snack foods,
pistachio and sunflower kernel were richest in phytosterols
(270-289 mg/100 g). beta-Sitosterol, Delta(5)-avenasterol,
and campesterol were predominant. Campestanol ranged from
1.0 to 12.7 mg/100 g. Only 13 mg/100 g beta-sitosterol was
found in pumpkin seed kernel, although total sterol content
was high (265 mg/100 g). Phytosterol concentrations were
greater than reported in existing food composition
databases, probably due to the inclusion of steryl
glycosides, which represent a significant portion of total
sterols in nuts and seeds. PMID: 16302759

That is a rather low dose. I suspect that it has a minor
effect only.

Sesame seed oil has a blood pressure lowering effect also. I
recall that there is a study showing that sesame seed oil used
together with a blood pressure medication is more effective
than medication only.
