I am researching all I can about the effect of low carbing while nursing before I start again.
DD is 7 months old...has started solids 2x per day....and 2 bottles of formula per day.....so she is only nursing about 4-6 times per day for 5-10 mins each time.
During pg I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes....so I was eating low carbish....watching flours/sugars....always combining protein with carb....and was usually showing low to moderate ketones in the afternoon. I gained 15 lbs while pg....(I weigh 225 lbs...so that was my max allowed as per ob)....
Anyway....I am just curious if other mother's are on Atkins....if they did induction....or how strict?
I was thinking of allowing nuts and maybe 1 fruit per day (apple or berries).....
Thanks!

I nursed my daughter for awhile after starting Atkins - she was about 11 months old at the time and was eating solid foods, and "comfort nursing" by that time as I like to call it. :)
Before I did though I talked to her pediatrician, the lactation consultant and my OBGYN and got the go-ahead from all of them. I was comfortable doing that by that time because I wasn't her primary source of nutrition anymore. Had I been, I wouldn't have been comfortable doing it. My Sammy-Jammy already had health issues and nothing was worth risking her health to me, no matter how minute.
I'm sure you already know that weight loss phases are not recommended for pregnant and nursing moms, but maintenance levels are. I'd suggest talking to her doctor and yours before you start. Better safe than sorry :)
I dunno if any of that helps or not. LOL

I am a nursing mom as well. I gained a whopping 70 pounds during my pregnancy, of which 20 still remain. I just started LC because I didn't want to start it while my child was super young. The key is not losing too fast. The toxins that are built up in your body that come out during weight loss do get excreted in breast milk, and build up. They don't metabolize like say alcohol or something would. NO- I dont drink, just an example. :)
Just go slow. For the sake of your baby. I would say 1 pound per week is all you want to lose while breastfeeding a child that young still.
Keep in mind, one of the best weight loss tricks is breastfeeding, in and of itself. :)
I would focus more on exercise if I were you. Between that, nursing, and a nice low carb approach you'll do great!
Just my 2cents by the way, I'm new to Atkins but not breastfeeding. :)

I'm having 1-2 servings of nuts per day and 2 servings of fruits (apple/berries).....and loading up on veg....not limiting that to only 3 cups of salad per day......
Better go drink another litre of water.....I am super thirsty though!

Well...I am down 4.5 lbs so far since Saturday! I know it won't stay at that pace though!

Hey all,
My DS is 10 months old I watched my carbs and tried to get all carbs from berries, veggies, and milk.
I have recently starting supplementing with formula. I just couldn't take all the pumping before work, at work, before bed anymore.
My milk supply didn't suffer and I am 10 pounds below my prepreggo weight.
Good Luck!

I am in ketosis even with the 2 servings of fruits and 1-2 servings of nuts...and 1 serving yogurt.....usually small to moderate......and DD seems fine with the milk......I am drinking 2-3 cups of mother's milk tea too.....
She get's 1 bottle of formula at bedtime...for a couple months already.....I add a tbsp of cereal to it....and she's been sleeping great!

I began lo carbing when my nursling was 1 year and 3 months. I was not her primary source anymore so I felt ok with it. Since I was having heart palpitations so often, I had to do soemthing or maybe I would not be around to enjoy my babe (and 6 other children) That was scary.
My milk supply has been ok. I notice I dont leak as I used to, so it probably has decreased some...and honestly inthis cool weather I dont drink near the water I should.
I did a strict induction..I must tell you that there were days I was in a fog. I work at home making soap and herbal care products so I jsut took a month or so off.
The first couple weeks was not too hard. I ate cheese, meats, and the allowed veg and got through it ok:) Then moved right to owl. I did not do owl correctly tho as I did not relaly understand what I was supposed to do even tho I read the book. It was after lo carbing about 4 months that I finally understood what it was I was supposed to do.. jeepers.
Hope that helps some:)
