I'm 26, male. I am looking to get in shape, and would like to
set a specific goal for a physical, mental, and perhaps
spiritual feat I would like to achieve after about 1 year of
training. This would serve as a focus for my training and a
specific goal to keep me motivated.

The typical go-to answer would be to say "I'd like to run a
marathon," but I really have no desire to do that--I find
running boring, it's bad on my back, and my brain usually
prefers going for less-traditional options.

The other extreme side of me says "I'd like to climb a
mountain." Maybe, but I have a feeling that this is probably
too much for me to accomplish in one year--maybe this can be
my 5-year goal.

Any advice or ideas for a creative goal I could set for
myself? I'd like it to be big, not just "I'd like to be able
to lift this many pounds" or "I'd like to look good in this
outfit" or "I'd like to win this competition." I am looking
for a combination of strength training, fat loss, and aerobic
stamina (in addition to mental toughness, focus,
determination, etc.)

Any creative ideas?

Martial arts. You sound like you'd be ok with the discipline
and the competitive element is a great incentive. Plus, once
you get a toe-hold (!), you can go in so many directions as
there are so many disciplines to explore.

Aim for the 300/400/500 club in 3 years time.

7 mins is pretty high goal for a beginner! That's 1:45/500m!
Some people (particularly those who don't pack a lot of mass)
can hardly supersede that in their best-shape, let alone be a
1 year goal for a beginner.

I wouldn't recommend setting a specific time limit on a rower
machine now. The time you achieve largely depends on body
constitution and mass and in comparison to others does not
accurately represent your level of fitness. What you should do
is test yourself for 2000 or 30mins and then try to improve
that time. If you can improve 15 (maybe
20) seconds on your 500m split in a year (that's 1 (1:20) mins
in 2000m race), you'd be doing a great job!

Just understand that you can achieve that much of improvement
only in your first year. Later, your progress will be slower
cause you'll already be in shape.

IMHO rowing (much more enjoyable than in-door rower, btw) is
one of the best sports to get in shape in terms strength,
stamina/fitness and mental focus. Concept2 has a great website
with lots of info... (www.concept2.com)

You can't get everything you've listed - "less-traditional",
"big", "strength", "fat loss", "aerobic stamina" and a few
other things, too - all at once.

For "less-traditional", Google "Girevoy Sport" - you won't get
bigger unless you're really scrawny and you certainly won't
get "big" by anyone's standard, but you'll get strong, lean,
mentally +tough, and have plenty of stamina. It's a sport
where you do maximum reps non-stop for 10 minutes, putting one
or two 70 lb. kettlebells overhead by means of a snatch or
jerk. Likewise Google "Dragan Radovic", a guy who puts 40 lb.
dumbbells overhead for seemingly endless reps.

Other strength/endurance hybrids are pretty easy to come up
with, too,
e.g., a 20:00 session of 50 reps of 1.5 time bodyweight in the
deadlift, or 100 reps with bodyweight in the same time.
These sorts of things are "less-traditional" and can get
you a lot of strength and a lot of endurance/stamina at
the same time.

Disclaimer - while I've competed at Girevoy Sport, I've
never done the 50 reps in 20 minutes thing or similar, just
heard about it.

Those are my "creative ideas."

I suggest thinking for yourself. How (and why) do you expect
people who don't know you to set such a personal goal for you?
If you're not even motivated enough to come up with your own
idea, I doubt you're going to have what it takes to achieve
much of anything.

Well, ignoring the "less-traditional" I could provide a 5 day
program (3 days weight/2 days aerobic alternated with 2 days
weight/3 days aerobic) which I have used over the last 3-4
years to achieve all of the above.

e.g.Month one: Mon: weights [legs/shoulders] Tue: aerobic
fitness on Concept2 [e.g. 10x250m with 2 mins rest] Wed:
weights [chest/triceps] Thu: weights [back/biceps] Fri:
aerobic fitness on Concept2

Month two: Mon: aerobic fitness on Concept2 Tue:
[legs/chest/triceps] Wed: aerobic fitness on Concept2
Thu: weights [back/shoulders/biceps] Fri: aerobic fitness
on Concept2

And haven't we had the "you can't build muscle and lose fat at
the same time unless you're a newbie" conversation on this
newsgroup many times before? Right after the "no program works
forever" conversation, I think.

dear frd i have go through u r mail and find u can reduce fat
and can come in shape, its not neccessary to do the some
running , and merathon but u can just fine out u r energy
intake and expenditure . means balance in calory intake and
out put wil help u to reduce the fate.
