J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo). 2005 Aug;51(4):292-310. Links
Effect of dietary factors on incidence of type 2 diabetes: a
systematic review of cohort studies.
Murakami K, Okubo H, Sasaki S.
Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences, Graduate School
of Nutritional and Environmental Sciences, University of
Shizuoka, Japan.
We systematically reviewed cohort studies on the effect of
nutrient and food intake (except for alcohol) on the incidence
of type 2 diabetes, which had been published in English as of
May 2004. Using the MEDLINE (PubMed) database as well as
reference lists of searched papers, 15 individual cohort
studies (a total of 31 papers) were identified. The number of
subjects (n= 895-85,060), follow-up length (5.9-23 y), the
number of diabetes cases (n= 74-4,085), dietary assessment
method used (simple food questionnaire, food frequency
questionnaire, food frequency interview, diet history
interview, and 24-h recall), and method of case ascertainment
(questionnaire, oral glucose tolerance test, fasting glucose
level, death certificate, and nationwide registry) varied
among studies. For nutrients, intakes of vegetable fat,
polyunsaturated fatty acid, dietary fiber (particularly cereal
fiber), magnesium, and caffeine were significantly inversely
correlated and intakes of trans fatty acid and heme-iron,
glycemic index, and glycemic load were significantly
positively correlated with the incidence of type 2 diabetes in
several papers. For foods and food groups, several papers
showed significantly decreased risk for type 2 diabetes with
the higher consumption of grain (particularly whole grain) and
coffee, and significantly increased risk with processed meat
consumption. Because all the studies were carried out in
Western countries, however, research in non-Western countries
including Japan is needed.

Very good, now let us tease out some of the particulars. In
other studies, no doubt included in this survey, it was iron
from red meat but not fish or poultry that made the
difference, the mention of processed meats reflects this risk
factor. Other studies show it is saturated fat and highly
processed carbohydrates which relate to higher risk for
diabetes, which is another way to say less saturated animal
sources such as fish and poultry don't. The study to which
referring also showed that lowering iron by bloodletting had
no effect on risk and that total iron neither. So this broad
overview study doesn't show the detail because not all studies
covered asked the same questions. What we can say is that
saturated fat sources and refined grains etc. are risk factors
for diabetes. What we can say in addition is that iron doesn't
cause diabetes but the package in which it often comes
includes saturated fats does. We can also that refined grains
and other refined sources of carbohydrates adds to the risk
level and both the fat and carbs are reflected in this
overview study. Good job, glad you brought it to our
attention.

"Actually .. I've noticed .. ONLY .. one study .. mentioning
.. RED meat ..
Show me .. two ..
Otherwise .. refrain from stating you have .. MORE .. than
one article"
Here are four quick ones:
1. Conclusions: Our data indicate that higher consumption of
total red meat, especially various processed meats, may
increase risk of developing type 2 diabetes in women.
2. Conclusions: Heme-iron intake from red meat sources is
positively associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Total iron intake, heme-iron intake from non-red meat
sources, and blood^ donations are not related to the risk
of type 2 diabetes.
3. RESULTS: The prudent pattern was characterized by higher
intakes of fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish, poultry, and
whole grains, while the Western pattern included higher
intakes of red and processed meats, sweets and desserts,
french fries, and refined grains. During 14 years of
follow-up, we identified 2699 incident cases
of type 2 diabetes. After adjusting for potential confounders,
we observed a relative risk for diabetes of 1.49 (95%
confidence interval
[CI], 1.26-1.76, P for trend, <.001) when
comparing the highest to lowest quintiles
of the Western pattern. Positive
associations were also observed between
type 2 diabetes and red meat and other
processed meats. The relative
risk for diabetes for every 1-serving increase in intake is
1.26 (95% CI,
1.21-1.42) for red meat, 1.38 (95% CI, 1.23-1.56)
for total processed meats, 1.73 (95% CI,
1.39-2.16) for bacon, 1.49 (95% CI, 1.04-2.11)
for hot dogs, and 1.43 (95% CI, 1.22-1.69) for
processed meats. CONCLUSION: The Western
pattern, especially a diet higher in processed
meats, may increase the risk for type 2
diabetes in women.
2. RESULTS: During 326,876 person-years of follow-up, we
documented 1,558 incident cases of type 2 diabetes. After
adjusting for age, BMI, total energy intake, exercise,
alcohol intake, cigarette smoking, and family history of
diabetes, we found positive associations between intakes of
red meat and processed meat and risk of type 2 diabetes.

No, I only extend that courtesy if expecting real discussion
and not unfounded propaganda pieces, only for those who want
to learn and not end arguments they can't win by use of
slander and vulgar language. If you really want to read the
abstracts, use some part of each and put it in your search
enjine of choice, a task you do each day endlessly trolling
for material and picking and choosing among it for propaganda
alone. Btw, those four were not the only that could have be

knew this relationship.
