I was thinking we could get a thread started with different breakfast smoothie ideas. Please help out. I have added fruit back into my diet, so my smoothie ideas have a little low GI fruit, but I would love to see “how low you can go” with your smoothie idea.

But I think for breakfast 12 carbs is a respectable number if it is replacing a whole breakfast. According to Dr. Eades from Protein Power, morning is the best time to eat higher carbs foods like fruit, though I know Dr. Agatston from South Beach thinks otherwise so I think you have to find out what works for you

Here is my standard breakfast smoothie; this is so filling it lasts me all morning. I hope others will share their ideas as well here and we get a really good list going…Please excuse the nickname, my kids named them one night when they wanted to have a drink of our Pina Coladas and I had to create something yummy for them minus the rum.

Pina Las Ninas (Coconut Smoothie)

½ cup coconut milk (3 carbs)
½ cup low carb juice replacement (I use the tangerine Minute Maid) (2 carbs)
1 Egg (less than 1 carb)
¼ cup frozen fruit (Walmart has a big bag of frozen fruit ) (the fruit is about 5 carbs max)
(see http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art584.asp for fruit carb counts)
1 scoop of vanilla or strawberry whey protein (mine has no carbs)
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 tbsp of virgin coconut oil (optional but makes a great healthy oil addition)
1 tbsp flaxmeal (optional as well but I add it for texture and fiber)
½ of ice (eyeball it)

Blend until smooth, can be shared as two smoothies, reducing the carb count to only six, but I usually drink the whole thing if the kids aren’t around to steal some. :p
