(Nov. Reader's Digest, p. 57): "Sugary sodas lead to weight gain, but it's not just the empty calories at fault, say scientists at the German Institute of Human Nutrition and other medical centers. It's the sugar. Many sodas are sweetened with fructose, a sugar found naturally in many fruits. Researchers, led by Hella Jurgens, fed mice either fructose-sweetened water, a soda sweetened with sucrose (table sugar), diet soda or water. Even though the mice that drank the fructose-sweenened water cut back on food, they gained the most weight - 8 grams, or 21% of their weight; those in the other groups gained less than 5 grams. What gives? "Fructose is converted to fatty acids in the liver at a greater rate than glucose," says Jurgens. That may lead to weight gain. Fructose is also disguised as high fructose corn syrup; read labels and keep your intake to a minimum."

European researchers are quietly acknowledging sugar's role in weight gain. This report would never have been printed even five years ago in the US, or would have been subjected to widespread criticism. Perhaps the Europeans are not so hidebound as the US by nutritional dogmas. km

Germany grows very, very little corn. Their sugar comes from sugar beets. That could explain the altruism.

Altruism? Man, I need a dictionary...

No, I need one. Altruism wasn't the right word. How about "...that could explain their 'enlightened' stance on nutritional dogma"?
